Three D Radio announcer, Megan Cat (up until recently with her husband, the late Peter Brat) lives in "The BratHaus" a rural seaside home about 100km from Adelaide on South Australia's scenic Fleurieu Peninsula.
Veteran musician Peter, and artist/musician Megan, were long-time DJs on Three D Radio 93.7fm
, Adelaide's eclectic independent music station.
Together Peter & Megan, known as "The Cat and The Brat" created this blog to allow listeners to review the playlists of their radio show, "Technicolour Dreaming" , watch clips of selected songs and simply join them in the enjoyment of their favourite music... psychedelia, 60's garage,
surf, punk/post-punk, pop, folk-rock, glam, 'Krautrock', goth, 80's electro... and much more!
But The Cat is carrying on the tradition, with guest co-presenters, and "Technicolour Dreaming" will continue in the same format, drawing from the huge "Cat & Brat" music collection, with the addition of new releases and reissues to keep things current. The Brat is hugely missed, but the show must go on, as he wanted...

Technicolour Dreaming

There is so much great new music at the moment for us to play on Technicolour Dreaming we are occasionally guilty of failing to feature the equally wonderful sounds of past decades from around the world as much as we perhaps should. Not this week however... almost half the songs are from both days past and diverse locales, including, amongst the 60’s contingent, the USA‘s Lyme & Cybelle [featuring a young Warren Zevon] and Hour Glass [from whence the Allman brothers appeared], Sweden’s Mecki Mark Men, an unjustly obscure, fantastic track from Frenchman Bernard Chabert and the Atlantics’ classic “Come On” featuring vocals by Australian legend, the late Johnny Rebb. Not that the aforementioned “great new music” was ignored though, with a spangly new EP from Adelaide veterans the Mynd Gardeners and a wonderful new single from Chicago’s the Luck of Eden Hall, both of which can be found on bandcamp and other digital outlets, which brings us to this show’s “Band of the Week” – the White Kites hail from Warsaw in Poland [though singer Sean Palmer is English, the rest of the band are Polish] and their debut full-length LP “Missing”, which was released in late 2013, is a brilliant modern take on late 60’s/early 70’s UK pop psych, with elements of folk, music-hall whimsy and space-rock woven into an album of clever, hook-laden pop songs which could easily have come from that era, but, produced with current production values, it makes them simultaneously modern, and that’s no mean feat, plus mention must be made of the fantastic cover art which presents an accurate guide to the splendours within! They certainly deserve their “band of the week” accolade, so check them out – you won’t be disappointed! So, until next week....

Technicolour Dreaming

It was the Radiothon ’14 edition of Technicolour Dreaming this week – chaos abounded with the phones ringing, the picking and organising of ‘bribe-to-subscribe’ giveaways, subscribers coming into the station, payments being made, volunteers running about and, unusually for us, lots of air-breaks and chatter and.... did I mention chaos? But it was all in a good cause – our annual Radiothon where we ask listeners to help keep us on-air by becoming valued 3D Radio subscribers! We won’t go into all the details – you can go to the 3D Radio website here and see how to pay [yes we do PayPal], the form to fill out, what you get for your bucks [including this year’s DepthCharge CD compilation which ONLY subscribers are given] and details of the major prizes you are in the running for when you do subscribe - all for the low price of $60.... it doesn’t matter if you live in Adelaide or Athens, the USA or Uruguay, anyone can be a 3D Radio subscriber and help us keep this unique music community radio station broadcasting every day of every week, and of course letting us, the Cat and the Brat, play all the wonderfully diverse psychedelia [and associated obscurities] that we love to share with you every Tuesday afternoon on this show. Normal broadcasting will resume next week of course [whew!] but in the meantime.... dig deep, go to the 3DRadio website and SUBSCRIBE people!

Technicolour Dreaming

Some new releases, some recent favourites plus a further bunch of “classics from the past” [in our minds at least] all go towards providing the regular formula for an episode of Technicolour Dreaming, and indeed all are present and correct here this week. In particular, we were excited to find in our PO Box the long-awaited second album by the Fast Camels, “Dead Rooms and Butterfly Dreams” as it’s been quite a while since they delivered their brilliant 2007 debut “The Magic Optician”. Despite personnel changes along the way, the band has continued to play live intermittently in their native Scotland and elsewhere, but no recordings were released until now. It was definitely worth the wait though, for, like their debut, it sounds more enticing every time we spin it and we believe you’ll agree that it’s another prime slice of 21st century psych-pop. Another such delicious slice came in the form of a [very] limited CD edition of “The Soft Focus EP”, previously only available digitally on Bandcamp etc, by Tasmania’s Violet Swells. They’ve created quite a buzz with these songs, especially lead single “Jupiters Garden”, even getting a rave-up in premier UK psych magazine “Shindig!” – not bad for a young band who only had their first live show a few months ago! Also on the show, our “Band of the Week” feature saluted Australia’s late, lamented Belles Will Ring, whose three albums and assorted singles will continue to enrich our musical vistas. Throw in some Kak, Pere Ubu, Luna, Morgan Delt and a plethora of others, and that was the show. Until we meet again next week .....
