Technicolour Dreaming

Community Radio can be fraught with challenges, not the least technical ones... I seemed to be beset with these from the start of the show, unfortunately having to cancel my scheduled interview with The Citradels, and things got worse from there, with CD players and computer refusing to work!. But no matter, it's all a challenge, and things seemed to come good in the end (but only after the hastily grabbed Scientist's 7" "stuck" due to overuse!). The show featured a Residents/Beatles double-play of "Flying", a hell of a lot of songs that started and ended in phasing, feedback and backwards effects, and much, much more. I actually managed to stay for the whole 2 hours of this week's show, whichwas a welcome change, while Harry had a well-earned rest. Amongst the bands I played were The Moving Sidewalks, which included Billy Gibbons,later of ZZ Top, as well as The WC Fields Memorial Electric String Band,who were the first band to release Stepping Stone, the classic version of which was made famous by The Monkees not long after. Also featured were a selectionof bands playing at the "Going Steady Festival" at Jive on December 13 2015, such as local acts The Dunes, Black Coral and Glass Skies, and headliners Moon Duo.

Technicolour Dreaming

We had a guest in the studio with us this week ... Vic from Walking Bird Records came in to give us a sneak preview of their latest release, the album “Look!” by Adelaide’s own Tom Redwood, recorded in Vic’s Walking Bird studio and featuring members of Vic’s own band, Vic Conrad & the First Third on some of the songs. Though basically ‘singer/song-writer’ in genre, there are more electric ‘acid-folk’ and ‘soft-psych’ elements in some of the songs, which we found appropriate for Technicolour Dreaming – definitely worth checking out! Our “Band of the Week” fetured UK band the Sunchymes, whom regular listeners will recognise as long-time favourites on this show. Aaron from the band has assured us that a new album is nearing completion and we’re hoping that this will be the one that finally gets them the recognition they richly deserve – a very talented band! Technicolour Dreaming

Before we begin, the Cat and the Brat would like to thank fellow 3D Radio announcers “harry” and Michael for stepping into the breach and doing the past couple of shows for us with such panache – great music from both of you! And while we were away, of course, a big pile of new releases awaited us at the P.O., only some of which we were able to fit into this week’s show, so look out for lots of new music in the weeks to come. But back to this show!  We started with a track for the long-anticipated new album from Finland’s veteran psychedelecists Octopus Syng, newly released on the UK’s “Mega Dodo” record company, who also put out the “Barnburner” split-EP by Mordecai Smyth and Icarus Peel. We also celebrated the “Fruits de Mer” vinyl-only label’s “Crabstock 2014” series of shows in the USA, Finland and Wales by playing tracks by some of the featured artists such as the Luck of Eden Hall, Sendelica and Sky Picnic as well as a few selections from the FdM back-catalogue. Add to these the usual mix of 60’s goodness by the likes of Procession, the Sorrows, Iceland’s legendary Thor’s Hammer and the Pretty Things, some proto-punk from Zolar X and the Dictators and new music from Holy Wave, Pinkunoizu and Night Beats plus much more, and it’s Technicolour Dreaming for another week......
