Three D Radio announcer, Megan Cat (up until recently with her husband, the late Peter Brat) lives in "The BratHaus" a rural seaside home about 100km from Adelaide on South Australia's scenic Fleurieu Peninsula.
Veteran musician Peter, and artist/musician Megan, were long-time DJs on Three D Radio 93.7fm
, Adelaide's eclectic independent music station.
Together Peter & Megan, known as "The Cat and The Brat" created this blog to allow listeners to review the playlists of their radio show, "Technicolour Dreaming" , watch clips of selected songs and simply join them in the enjoyment of their favourite music... psychedelia, 60's garage,
surf, punk/post-punk, pop, folk-rock, glam, 'Krautrock', goth, 80's electro... and much more!
But The Cat is carrying on the tradition, with guest co-presenters, and "Technicolour Dreaming" will continue in the same format, drawing from the huge "Cat & Brat" music collection, with the addition of new releases and reissues to keep things current. The Brat is hugely missed, but the show must go on, as he wanted...

Technicolour Dreaming

Some tasty treats from the wonderful Fruits de Mer Records arrived in my letterbox, so of course I just had to play ALL of them on the show this week - how could I resist! The current crop of soon-to-be-released vinyl included the latest single from the sixties legends July (an exclusive extended version, and a demo mix of "Can I Go Back Again" a song that appeared in it's original form on their new album "Resurrection"); a coloured vinyl 4-track 7" 33rpm EP (phew!) from Crystal Jacqueline, titled "Morning Dew"; and finally Sendelica's latest spacerock epic, "The Cromlech Chronicles" LP, with which I closed the show by playing all 20 minutes worth of Side 2 - because I can!
Other new releases included Doug Tuttle's "It Calls on Me", and another track off The Luck of Eden Hall's wonderful "The Acceleration of Time" plus a swag of songs from 2015 which I've only just got around to playing.....
So here's the playlist, with not nearly as many clips as usual, cos I can't include what doesn't exist - a pitfall of playing relatively "unknown" bands, but at least the music's out there to enjoy.

Technicolour Dreaming

Just when you think that the recent spate of musical heroes departing this earth has abated, along comes a very big lightning bolt from the blue - David Bowie has joined them. Not a promising start for the year, but a fitting reason to re-listen to Bowie's collected works, and play some favourites on the radio. Indeed, on the day in question, by the time 1pm had rolled around, there had been a massive 29 Bowie tracks aired, with not a single repetition amongst them! Just goes to show that Bowie's different stylistic twists and turns appealed to a very wide range of fans over the years. Sadly, so many inspirational musicians are approaching an age where their mortality is becoming more and more apparent - as a friend recently wrote, someone should go find Keith Richards and roll him up in bubble-wrap, pronto!
..and here's the playlist for this week's show, clips and all... David Bowie - Scream Like a Baby ("Scary Monsters" LP 1980 UK)

Soft Hearted Scientists - Diving Bell ("Uncanny Tales from the Everyday Undergrowth" 2015reissue Wales UK)
Papy - Toi le Shazam (7" single 1967 France)
Fatty Nautty - Tumba Part 2 ("Fatty Nautty EP" 1968 France)
Dodson and Fogg - Clunes the Gravedigger ("In a Strange Slumber" 2014 UK)

Technicolour Dreaming

The so-called “race that stops a nation” passed with barely a ripple here at 3D Radio, though we did begin with Welsh popsters Race Horses as an ironic wink, thus leaving the rest of the show to our regular perusal of new sounds, topped up with older favourites and obscurities. In the latter grouping, we saluted the late Paul Revere, who continued performing with a version of the Raiders until last year – definitely a lifetime dedicated to music – by playing, from 1965, one of their many great songs, “Just Like Me”. Amongst the newer contingent were tracks by Moth Effect, Melbourne’s Basement Spaceman, the latest release by Beaulieu Porch and the upcoming single by Sweden’s Haleiwa. Finally, for two weeks in a row, our “Artiste of the Week” was provided by Switzerland... last week it was Borderline Symphony, this time it is the prolific musician known as Balduin. He has just released “All In A Dream”, a new limited edition ‘vinyl-only’ LP on the UK’s Sunstone Records, following his sold-out “The Glamour Forest” EP from earlier in the year. Both have been garnished with well-deserved rave reviews in magazines such as “Shindig!” and various on-line psych blogs and this new LP has flown into Technicolour Dreaming’s “Top 5 releases of 2014” list! So, until next week....

Technicolour Dreaming

Amongst the new releases featured this week on the show was the Junipers Euphonius Trolley EP”, their pop-psych side-project, and if the track we played, “My Budgerigar (is addicted to rasmalai)”, is any indication, we can only hope they pursue this direction further and put out a full album – we loved it!  Do check it out! Also featured were new tracks from the Horrors, the Roaring 420’s, Kikagaku Moyo and Octopus Syng, plus two French favourites, Sudden Death of Stars and Forever Pavot. Technicolour Dreaming

Before we begin, the Cat and the Brat would like to thank fellow 3D Radio announcers “harry” and Michael for stepping into the breach and doing the past couple of shows for us with such panache – great music from both of you! And while we were away, of course, a big pile of new releases awaited us at the P.O., only some of which we were able to fit into this week’s show, so look out for lots of new music in the weeks to come. But back to this show!  We started with a track for the long-anticipated new album from Finland’s veteran psychedelecists Octopus Syng, newly released on the UK’s “Mega Dodo” record company, who also put out the “Barnburner” split-EP by Mordecai Smyth and Icarus Peel. We also celebrated the “Fruits de Mer” vinyl-only label’s “Crabstock 2014” series of shows in the USA, Finland and Wales by playing tracks by some of the featured artists such as the Luck of Eden Hall, Sendelica and Sky Picnic as well as a few selections from the FdM back-catalogue. Add to these the usual mix of 60’s goodness by the likes of Procession, the Sorrows, Iceland’s legendary Thor’s Hammer and the Pretty Things, some proto-punk from Zolar X and the Dictators and new music from Holy Wave, Pinkunoizu and Night Beats plus much more, and it’s Technicolour Dreaming for another week......
