Technicolour Dreaming

Just when you think that the recent spate of musical heroes departing this earth has abated, along comes a very big lightning bolt from the blue - David Bowie has joined them. Not a promising start for the year, but a fitting reason to re-listen to Bowie's collected works, and play some favourites on the radio. Indeed, on the day in question, by the time 1pm had rolled around, there had been a massive 29 Bowie tracks aired, with not a single repetition amongst them! Just goes to show that Bowie's different stylistic twists and turns appealed to a very wide range of fans over the years. Sadly, so many inspirational musicians are approaching an age where their mortality is becoming more and more apparent - as a friend recently wrote, someone should go find Keith Richards and roll him up in bubble-wrap, pronto!

Technicolour Dreaming

With Michael Hunter in the Technicolour Dreaming chair for the week, the music ranged from the Croatian psych pop of Pridjevi to stoner psych metal (OHHMS) and a couple of examples of psy-chill and psy-dub.  This came via some unreleased demos of 1960s Australian rock from The Wild Cherries and The Down'N'Out and live unreleased Screaming Believers, with a nod to Peter Brat with one of Rashamra's hit singles and a mash-up of The Cure and The Commodores (!) via BRAT Productions (no relation).  No wonder the Sapphire Thinkers felt a bit strange by the end!

Technicolour Dreaming

the Cat& the Brat were unable to do this week’s edition of Technicolour Dreaming, but fellow 3D Radio announcer Bryan, of Tuesday morning’s great “Mellowscream” show, dropped into the control console and saved the day! Following the Cat & Brat show guidelines [psych, garage, surf, punk, pop, glam etc ...] was no stretch as these included his faves as well, so we heard a diverse bunch of tunes encompassing all these and more... including three tracks on which Peter Brat played, from a teenage single with Rashamra up to the most recent with the Molting Vultures. Obscured By...

Welcome to the first edition for 2012, brought to you by the Cat and the Brat, this week’s combination of ‘dots’. As well as our usual selection of Australian and world-wide rarities, a large portion of the show was taken up by our tribute to the art of “the Boxset”... regular listeners will of course be aware of our fondness for the format, particularly of the compilation variety, the ‘Nuggets’ series being one of our faves and so we sampled from a couple of them... after all, Lenny Kaye’s original Nuggets compilation LP in 1972 kicked off the whole idea of salvaging great music that was in danger of being forgotten, and which we, in our small way, try to continue in Obscured by...  Another favourite is the ‘Babylon’s Burning’ punk obscurities set, which we made our ‘featured’ boxset and plundered mercilessly to bring you rarities by the likes of Rocket from the Tombs, Victim and the Rezillos. We also played several tracks from our newest acquisition, [XTC as] the Dukes of Stratosphear ‘Complete and Utter Dukes’ set, before finishing with a small taste from yet another favourite, ‘Electric Psychedelic Sitar Headswirlers Vol. 1-10’ by 60’s Adelaide popsters the Twilights .....
