Three D Radio announcer, Megan Cat (up until recently with her husband, the late Peter Brat) lives in "The BratHaus" a rural seaside home about 100km from Adelaide on South Australia's scenic Fleurieu Peninsula.
Veteran musician Peter, and artist/musician Megan, were long-time DJs on Three D Radio 93.7fm
, Adelaide's eclectic independent music station.
Together Peter & Megan, known as "The Cat and The Brat" created this blog to allow listeners to review the playlists of their radio show, "Technicolour Dreaming" , watch clips of selected songs and simply join them in the enjoyment of their favourite music... psychedelia, 60's garage,
surf, punk/post-punk, pop, folk-rock, glam, 'Krautrock', goth, 80's electro... and much more!
But The Cat is carrying on the tradition, with guest co-presenters, and "Technicolour Dreaming" will continue in the same format, drawing from the huge "Cat & Brat" music collection, with the addition of new releases and reissues to keep things current. The Brat is hugely missed, but the show must go on, as he wanted...

Technicolour Dreaming

Between two English bands, beginning with Jason Crest from 1967 and finishing with P.I.L. in 2012, we heard recordings from different continents, eras and styles as always on this show, presented again this week by both the Cat & the Brat, but for the first time from our new 3D Radio studios in St Peters. There seemed to be a large European contingent though, amongst them les Liminanas from France, S.T Mikael from Sweden, Head & the Hares from Italy, and Rob de Neys from the Netherlands. We were saddened to hear of the passing of Reg Presley and featured a tribute to his iconic band, the Troggs. We played some classic Mike Furber, Doors and Rezillos plus songs from the Allah-Las, Toy and Jim Noir, not to mention Part 1 of “Space Kids”, a radio serial featuring music by the Lost from 1968 that was never broadcast [watch out for Part 2 next week!] Throw in Johnny Young & the Easybeats demoing ‘Step Back’ in 1966 and Nico joining Bauhaus onstage in 1981, with lots more great music and there’s the show for another week.....

Obscured By...

Welcome to the first edition for 2012, brought to you by the Cat and the Brat, this week’s combination of ‘dots’. As well as our usual selection of Australian and world-wide rarities, a large portion of the show was taken up by our tribute to the art of “the Boxset”... regular listeners will of course be aware of our fondness for the format, particularly of the compilation variety, the ‘Nuggets’ series being one of our faves and so we sampled from a couple of them... after all, Lenny Kaye’s original Nuggets compilation LP in 1972 kicked off the whole idea of salvaging great music that was in danger of being forgotten, and which we, in our small way, try to continue in Obscured by...  Another favourite is the ‘Babylon’s Burningpunk obscurities set, which we made our ‘featured’ boxset and plundered mercilessly to bring you rarities by the likes of Rocket from the Tombs, Victim and the Rezillos. We also played several tracks from our newest acquisition, [XTC as] the Dukes of Stratosphear Complete and Utter Dukes’ set, before finishing with a small taste from yet another favourite, ‘Electric Psychedelic Sitar Headswirlers Vol. 1-10’ by 60’s Adelaide popsters the Twilights .....

Technicolour Dreaming

This week on Technicolour Dreaming, the Cat & the Brat interviewed Sam from new Melbourne band, Brat Farrar, who are playing in Adelaide this weekend as part of an Australian tour promoting their new 7” single. Sam also spoke of his ‘other band’, Digger & the Pussycats, and their recent gigs in China and Europe... Of course there was the usual eclectic mix of 60s Adelaide bands, such as Inside Looking Out, through to recent songs by Sparks and BrightblackMorningLight, as well as a track from our current ‘Album of the Month’ by Belles Will Ring. We also paid tribute to the late Martin Rushent, whose career as engineer, producer and musician spanned 40-odd years. We began with an example of his early engineering work, alongside Tony Visconti, on the classic “Electric Warrior” by T.Rex, before moving onto a selection of his production of many of the leading lights of the UK punk movement, such as the Buzzcocks, Generation X and the Stranglers... then, representing his pioneering work in the 80s ‘electro/dance’ era we played a Human League track, finishing with a recent song by his son’s band, Does It Offend You, Yeah?
