Three D Radio announcer, Megan Cat (up until recently with her husband, the late Peter Brat) lives in "The BratHaus" a rural seaside home about 100km from Adelaide on South Australia's scenic Fleurieu Peninsula.
Veteran musician Peter, and artist/musician Megan, were long-time DJs on Three D Radio 93.7fm
, Adelaide's eclectic independent music station.
Together Peter & Megan, known as "The Cat and The Brat" created this blog to allow listeners to review the playlists of their radio show, "Technicolour Dreaming" , watch clips of selected songs and simply join them in the enjoyment of their favourite music... psychedelia, 60's garage,
surf, punk/post-punk, pop, folk-rock, glam, 'Krautrock', goth, 80's electro... and much more!
But The Cat is carrying on the tradition, with guest co-presenters, and "Technicolour Dreaming" will continue in the same format, drawing from the huge "Cat & Brat" music collection, with the addition of new releases and reissues to keep things current. The Brat is hugely missed, but the show must go on, as he wanted...

Technicolour Dreaming

We began this week with some modern psychedelia from Italy. Sonic Jesus released this debut EP on Fuzz Club Records last year and more recently have done a split 10” single with the Black Angels on the same label. They were just one of some great new bands we played on the show today, including Sydney’s Aether Beach and Los Tones, and the UK’s Violet Woods. Needless to say there were also a bunch of our regular faves such as Balduin, the See See, Singapore Sling and the Dandelion, as well as some brilliant music by the Rolling Stones, the Throb, the Bee Gees and others from the mid-1960’s, since acknowledged as ‘the first psychedelic era. This then led us into our new feature, “Compilation of the Week”, which we debuted by playing a bunch of classic singles taken from that original garage psych compilation, the one which has since spawned a plethora of successors, namely the 1972 double-LP, “Nuggets : Original Artyfacts from the First Psychedelic  Era, 1965-1968”, which was compiled of course by Lenny Kaye, who later found renown in the Patti Smith Group, though Nuggets will probably be his real legacy, and thus a fitting start to our new feature. So, until next week.....

Technicolour Dreaming

It’s the final show for 2013 and it was on New Year’s Eve, so it was appropriate we wrapped up our series of “Favourites of the Year” with what was certainly a highlight of 2013 – the new Wooden Shjips LP. Before we got there though, there was a plethora of other faves to be played, though of course some slipped through the cracks and these will no doubt ooze into our early 2014 shows! Obscured By...

Normally we wouldn’t play quite so many songs from a pair of albums, but the 40th anniversary re-issue of the original 1972 Nuggets compilation has prompted a couple of Australian releases to join the on-going series and thankfully didn’t just contain ‘the hits’ or ‘oft-comped’... so we felt free to plunder! Of particular interest were the ‘versions’ by current bands... some interesting interpretations indeed [though why so very few bands from outside the Sydney/Melbourne axis, hmmm?] To balance this outpouring of Australiana, we threw in a bunch of Swedish psych/freakbeat singles from the 60’s, an obscure Luke Haines recording, a 17 minute Neil Young track from his new album [yes, he’s hardly ‘obscure’, but well, who else but we three DOTS would play such long songs on radio?], plus a brand-new demo from garage/surf kings Dieselwitch...
... so here is the playlist...
the Moods – Rum Drunk      (7”single 1966 Melbourne, Australia – taken from ‘Down Under Nuggets: Original Australian Artyfacts 1965-1967’ compilation 2012 Australia)

the Bee Gees – Like Nobody Else      (rec. 1966, released on ‘Inception/Nostalgia’ double-LP anthology 1970 Germany – taken from ‘Down Under Nuggets...’)
Barrington Davis – Raining Teardrops      (7”single 1967 Sydney, Aust. – taken from ‘Down Under Nuggets...’)
the Sunsets – Hot Generation [soundtrack version]      (rec. 1967 for film but unreleased until ‘Down Under Nuggets...’)
the Straight Arrows – Lies [Knickerbockers cover]      (‘Nuggets: Antipodean Interpolations of the First Psychedelic Era’ compilation 2012 Australia)
Step-Panther – Liar, Liar [Castaways cover]      (‘Nuggets: Antipodean Interpolations ...’)
Pond – Hey Joe [Leaves cover]      (‘Nuggets: Antipodean Interpolations ...’)
