Technicolour Dreaming

It’s the final show for 2013 and it was on New Year’s Eve, so it was appropriate we wrapped up our series of “Favourites of the Year” with what was certainly a highlight of 2013 – the new Wooden Shjips LP. Before we got there though, there was a plethora of other faves to be played, though of course some slipped through the cracks and these will no doubt ooze into our early 2014 shows! Technicolour Dreaming

The phones were ringing, subscribers knocking on the doors, volunteers filling out forms & taking details and payments.... yes, it was our annual Radiothon week at 3D Radio! The Cat & the Brat were busy playing a bunch of faves plus tracks from ‘giveaway’ albums, chatting to local musicians such as Brenton Manser, who brought in his latest album, and even managing to squeeze in a ‘live-in-the-studio’ interview with up-and-coming local band the Byzantines, who are releasing their debut EP this week. Whew! Technicolour Dreaming

Ant and Dan from Adelaide’s conquering psych heroes, Ride Into The Sun, were welcomed back from their recent US tour, which centred on their well-received appearance at the 2013 Austin Psych Fest, as interviewees & guest programmers on this week’s show. We also previewed tracks from their new, self-titled mini-LP [available in a very limited edition on psychedelic, multi-coloured vinyl, as well as on CD] which will be launched here on Saturday 6^th July, when they play alongside the Morning After Girls and Archers at ‘Jive’ in Hindley Street... certainly a contender for ‘gig of the year’! The guys had lots of stories to share from their sojourn in the US and played tracks by some of the bands they encountered, including the Black Ryder, Singapore Sling and, of course, festival hosts the Black Angels. Also thrown into the mix of sounds were Spain’s Los Chicos, German psychedelicists Sula Bassana and the debut of Adelaide’s the Byzantines plus the latest single by Pond, a classic b-side from the Stems and a track from the new Mikal Cronin LP, finishing with a French 60’s single by Les Yper Sound which was later used in the theme for TV’s ‘Futurama’.....

Technicolour Dreaming

We began and ended the show this week with a couple of our favourite current bands, Gravenhurst from the UK and Moon Duo from the USA, as well as playing a pre-release copy of the new Ride Into The Sun single, taken from their upcoming mini-LP which, was produced in Melbourne by Alex Maas of the Black Angels – more news of that as it comes to hand! As always, we ventured far and wide for the programme, with tracks from Norway, Chile, the Netherlands and New Zealand amongst others plus some 60’s rarities such as the Tripsichord Music Box and the Attack. We also paid tribute to Jason Molina of Magnolia Electric Co. who passed away at a mere 39 years old – certainly an indictment of the American system of health care, or rather, the lack of it for people like musicians [though even the rich aren’t immune to its deficiencies – remember Andy Warhol being left to die neglected in a hospital corridor?] But we digress... Jason made some great music, and though it wasn’t exactly ‘psychedelic’, we felt he deserved tribute. On the lighter side, we played a version of the Woody Woodpecker song, a track from the bizarre ‘I Buried Paul: death rumour singles’ compilation that was released last year and check out the Vagrants clip from the 1965 ‘Beach Party’ exploitation movie “Disk-o-Tek Holiday” – they don’t make them like that anymore! Throw in some Monkees, Toy, Donovan and other assorted goodies and it’s another edition of Technicolour Dreaming... brought to you by the Cat & the Brat on 3D Radio, Adelaide, South Australia......
