Three D Radio announcer, Megan Cat (up until recently with her husband, the late Peter Brat) lives in "The BratHaus" a rural seaside home about 100km from Adelaide on South Australia's scenic Fleurieu Peninsula.
Veteran musician Peter, and artist/musician Megan, were long-time DJs on Three D Radio 93.7fm
, Adelaide's eclectic independent music station.
Together Peter & Megan, known as "The Cat and The Brat" created this blog to allow listeners to review the playlists of their radio show, "Technicolour Dreaming" , watch clips of selected songs and simply join them in the enjoyment of their favourite music... psychedelia, 60's garage,
surf, punk/post-punk, pop, folk-rock, glam, 'Krautrock', goth, 80's electro... and much more!
But The Cat is carrying on the tradition, with guest co-presenters, and "Technicolour Dreaming" will continue in the same format, drawing from the huge "Cat & Brat" music collection, with the addition of new releases and reissues to keep things current. The Brat is hugely missed, but the show must go on, as he wanted...

Technicolour Dreaming

The phones were ringing, subscribers knocking on the doors, volunteers filling out forms & taking details and payments.... yes, it was our annual Radiothon week at 3D Radio! The Cat & the Brat were busy playing a bunch of faves plus tracks from ‘giveaway’ albums, chatting to local musicians such as Brenton Manser, who brought in his latest album, and even managing to squeeze in a ‘live-in-the-studio’ interview with up-and-coming local band the Byzantines, who are releasing their debut EP this week. Whew! So we’d like to thank all those people who subscribed to help keep this great totally volunteer-run radio station continue to be independent and on-air – and you can still subscribe anytime... just go to the 3D Radio website and follow the prompts, and don’t forget that each subscriber receives a copy of the latest edition of DepthCharge, our annual CD compilation of Adelaide bands.

Technicolour Dreaming

Former Obscured by... and now occasional Technicolour Dreaming co-host, Michael Hunter, joined Peter Brat in the studio this week [while the Cat was away...] and brought in some obscure treats for our aural enjoyment, including a compilation of 70’s European glam and another of 60’s garage punk from Sacramento which included a 1966 version of ‘She’s a Mod’, which in Australia & New Zealand was a big hit for Ray Columbus in 1965. The name of the band doing this version? The Mods, of course! He also dredged up an instructional promo for the ARP synthesiser company, narrated by Roger Powell, who went on to play with Todd Rundgren’s Utopia amongst others. Then of course there were some newer goodies to play, including recently released mp3 tracks from the See See and the Barbarellatones plus a cool new song from the legendary Petula Clark, now in her 80th year – great stuff! As well there was a song from Dutch band DeWolff who are touring Australia in March and one from the latest album by Irish psych-poppers, Pugwash. Throw in a few Australian tracks from the 70’s, some Paul & Linda McCartney [enjoy the doco about RAM from 1971 we’ve included] and a surfeit of other good sounds, finishing with Eternal Tapestry, whose new album should be in our hands by next week... and then it was over! Sadly, this was the last edition to be broadcast from our long-time studios in the iconic "brownstone house in Stepney". From next week onwards, we will be bringing you our show from the new 3D Radio studios in leafy suburban St Peters.... so stay tuned!

Technicolour Dreaming

the Cat and the Brat began this week’s edition of Technicolour Dreaming with Nuvo Bloc, a band that received quite a bit of airplay when 3D Radio (under the moniker of 5MMM) first started broadcasting way back in 1979, and then dropped in a few bands such as Almost Numan and Fluffy who’ve had similar recognition more recently, before finishing the show with the winners of the TOP 101 for 2011, Ride Into The Sun. Along the way, we played some 70’s and 80’s favourites such as Roxy Music, the Associates (featuring the brilliant voice of Billy MacKenzie) and Big Black, as well as some new music from Dewolff and La Bastard, with a sing-a-long from the Rutles thrown in... mainly so we could put up the accompanying clip from their movie..... heh heh!
