Sitars, theremin and mellotron, backwards guitar, phasing and fuzz, fringes and mohawks, paisley, black, velvet and leather, feedback, bass and drone, beads, berets and safety-pins, Shindig! and Creem, 3 chord wonders, teenage symphonies and snarl, Rickenbacker, Farfisa and 4-track recorders... onstage at CBGB's, Max's Kansas City or the Trip, the Roundhouse, the 100 Club or the Crystal Ballroom, Catcher's, Big Daddy's or the Squatters Arms.... and the Cat and the Brat on 3D Radio!
Three D Radio announcer, MeganCat (up until recently with her husband, the late Peter Brat)lives in "The BratHaus" a rural seaside home about 100km from Adelaide on South Australia's scenic Fleurieu Peninsula. Veteran musician Peter, and artist/musician Megan, were long-time DJs onThree D Radio 93.7fm, Adelaide's eclectic independent music station. Together Peter & Megan, known as "The Cat and The Brat" created this blog to allow listeners to review the playlists of their radio show, "Technicolour Dreaming", watch clips of selected songs and simply join them in the enjoyment of their favourite music... psychedelia, 60's garage, surf, punk/post-punk, pop, folk-rock, glam, 'Krautrock', goth, 80's electro... and much more!
But The Cat is carrying on the tradition, with guest co-presenters, and "Technicolour Dreaming" will continue in the same format, drawing from the huge "Cat & Brat" music collection, with the addition of new releases and reissues to keep things current. The Brat is hugely missed, but the show must go on, as he wanted...
At Three D Radiowe are lucky enough to receive donations of CDs and vinyl to fill gaps in our collection, often from other announcers (I'm sure regular listeners will have heard me, and others, mentioning the latest release donated by Andrew K, whose show follows Technicolour Dreaming), and sometimes from generous members of the public. So I was very pleased to discover the compilation "Monster a Go-Go: Teen Trash from Psychedelic Tokyo '66-'69"had appeared as a new acquisition, and that it had not one, but two tracks by The Spiders! Some years ago, I had seen a some excerpts from the 1968 movie "Go Forward!" and a few other comedies that featured The Spiders (apparently there are thirteen in total!), but had no idea of the names of the songs. I've now discovered that one of my favourites was "Nati Bati Yi", which is included on the compilation (obscure fact - backing vocalist and tambourine player Masaaki Sakai might be better known as the lead character in the TV series "Monkey"). So here's the playlist for the show, with clip of "Go Forward!" at the end, for your amusement...

Another of the Nuggets series of boxsets was our choice
for this edition’s “Compilation of the Week”...This time it
was “Where
the Action Is! Los Angeles Nuggets
1965-1968” which was released in 2009, in a hard-cover book format with the 4-CDs
slotted into the back cover – lots of very cool photos and articles with
detailed liner notes about each song and artist... and what great songs they
are! This is probably our favourite of the Nuggets
boxset collection [the 1972 original double-LP stands separately of course!]
because LA was producing a plethora of wonderful bands in this period, many
well-known, but most not, which in no way diminishes the quality of the sounds
coming out of the area however – brilliant stuff! Basically, if you can only
have one boxset, this is the one! Another producer of fine music is the UK’s Fruits de Mer label whose latest
compilation “Strange Fruit & Veg” is
packed with goodies. From it this week we chose a great version of theBeatles’ “Tomorrow
Never Knows”, complete with filmclip. We also featured an Australian 60’s
section with tracks by Ray Brown and Hugo amongst others, plus recent music from acts
such as Lumerians, the
Myrrors and Elephant Stone. So now, we
bid you “adieu” until next week, when we’ll have more psychedelia and
associated obscurities for your listening and viewing pleasure....
.....until then, here is
the playlist and some visuals to amuse you, including the Kikagaku Moyo “official clip” for ‘Kodama’..... enjoy!

It’s the 1st show of the year
and we had a large pile of new vinyl and CDs to play and thus begin as we intend to go on..... with a “kerrang”, as it were!
Apart from all the formerly forgotten ‘lost’
classics from the past
that are again seeing the light of day and finding appreciative audiences due
to the dedication of ‘re-issue’
labels making them affordable again
rather than just the preserve of a few well-heeled ‘collectors’, there is a rising
swell of new, young
bands from all over the world who are
building on these roots and creating a plethora of new psychedelicsounds – 2014promises to be
another interesting year for psychedelia and associated sounds! So, without further ado.....
