Technicolour Dreaming

Another of the Nuggets series of boxsets was our choice for this edition’s “Compilation of the Week”... This time it was “Where the Action Is!  Los Angeles Nuggets 1965-1968” which was released in 2009, in a hard-cover book format with the 4-CDs slotted into the back cover – lots of very cool photos and articles with detailed liner notes about each song and artist... and what great songs they are! This is probably our favourite of the Nuggets boxset collection [the 1972 original double-LP stands separately of course!] because LA was producing a plethora of wonderful bands in this period, many well-known, but most not, which in no way diminishes the quality of the sounds coming out of the area however – brilliant stuff! Basically, if you can only have one boxset, this is the one! Another producer of fine music is the UK’s Fruits de Mer label whose latest compilation “Strange Fruit & Veg” is packed with goodies. From it this week we chose a great version of the Beatles’ “Tomorrow Never Knows”, complete with filmclip. We also featured an Australian 60’s section with tracks by Ray Brown and Hugo amongst others, plus recent music from acts such as Lumerians, the Myrrors and Elephant Stone. So now, we bid you “adieu” until next week, when we’ll have more psychedelia and associated obscurities for your listening and viewing pleasure....

Technicolour Dreaming

Regular listeners to 3D Radio will be aware of the Cat and the Brat’s penchant for compilations, anthologies and boxsets and our fondness for the unjustly obscure, whether it be old or new. This week we continued on our never-ending quest to share such aural delights with our listeners, starting with a track from the latest album by American psych outfit, Eternal Tapestry... and from there it went all over the place, including songs from two new Adelaide bands, Angels of Gungho and the Solar City and another from the excellent debut by Melody’s Echo Chamber. As always there were a few songs from better known artists, in this case T.Rex, the Walker Brothers and the Rolling Stones, plus a couple of Nico tunes, before we ventured off into lesser known territory with Simon & de Sade and the Ronnie James Reincarnation from the wonderful Electric Sound Show compilation boxset and the Moods from the new Nuggets Down Under selection. As promised last week we played the conclusion to the Lost’s ‘Space Kids’ radio serial... and were relieved that little Jimmy made it back to Earth unharmed after saving the world! [heh heh!]

Sadly, we again paid tribute to another late, great Australian musician.... this week it was Mick Hadley [1942-2012], vocalist with the Purple Hearts et al ... but even though the ranks of those that made all those brilliant records grow ever thinner, the music remains undimmed!  ‘Early in the Morning’, and Ray Brown’s ‘That’s Evil’ for example, still have the power to inspire, as numerous younger bands continue to testify, and in their turn inspire the next wave and so on, and thus why we include current bands such as Psychic Ills in our search for the path less trodden here on ‘Obscured by...’ – this week with just two dots to do the exploring! And it was not merely 60’s music we found, but a bunch of Los Angeles punkers such as X and the Zeros, some Krautrock from Sergius Golowin plus UK neo-psych trailblazers Echo & the Bunnymen and electronic post-punk pioneers the Human League... all in all, just another day in the [obscured] office.....
