Technicolour Dreaming

Beginning with a track from the latest LP by Germany’s Vibravoid, the Cat & the Brat once again this week weaved a tenuous path through the labyrinths of their collective archives of favourite tunes, to bring you an assortment of sounds by bands as diverse as the Long Ryders, Death In June, Amon Düül, Melody’s Echo Chamber, Plasticland and the brilliant Espers, plus solo efforts from the likes of Cate Le Bon, Eric Ghardin and Chris Bell, before finishing on a ‘1-2 knockout’ with the Seeds and the Sufis. We confess to rather long and verbose introductions to a couple of our latest acquisitions, namely the wonderful second album from the UK’s Beaulieu Porch and the debut by young Dutch psychstar Jacco Gardner – both artists have rapidly won a high spot in our ‘all-time fave’ list! Technicolour Dreaming

Perusing the ‘New Releases’  section of the Three D library, we discovered the new Black Angels’ album had arrived – and with only a few weeks until the annual ‘Austin Psych Fest’, of which they are the primary organisers, we naturally felt we should give it an airing, plus play a couple of the other bands of similar ilk such as Permanent Clear Light and Ringo Deathstarr, as well as Adelaide’s own Ride Into The Sun, spinning the b-side of their new single, which is being launched this week in Adelaide. From there it was a mixture of newer music from the likes of Cate le Bon, Decoys and Los Straightjackets and a fair smattering of 60’s magic by bands such as the Strawberry Alarm Clock, July and the Avengers. We also played a cool 1967 single by Mark Radice which caught our attention recently. Though only 10 years old, he wrote, performed and produced it himself – later in life he went on to tour with Aerosmith, Cheap Trick, Johnny Mathis and many others before finding fame as ‘Elmo’ on TV’s ‘Sesame Street’, thus going from child entertainer to children’s entertainer! We then spun some more UK and European psych singles before featuring a classic piece by one of our favourite bands of the 1970’s, the Sensational Alex Harvey Band, to wrap up the show.... all brought to you by the Cat and Brat on Adelaide’s 3D Radio......

Technicolour Dreaming

Regular listeners to 3D Radio will be aware of the Cat and the Brat’s penchant for compilations, anthologies and boxsets and our fondness for the unjustly obscure, whether it be old or new. This week we continued on our never-ending quest to share such aural delights with our listeners, starting with a track from the latest album by American psych outfit, Eternal Tapestry... and from there it went all over the place, including songs from two new Adelaide bands, Angels of Gungho and the Solar City and another from the excellent debut by Melody’s Echo Chamber. As always there were a few songs from better known artists, in this case T.Rex, the Walker Brothers and the Rolling Stones, plus a couple of Nico tunes, before we ventured off into lesser known territory with Simon & de Sade and the Ronnie James Reincarnation from the wonderful Electric Sound Show compilation boxset and the Moods from the new Nuggets Down Under selection. As promised last week we played the conclusion to the Lost’s ‘Space Kids’ radio serial... and were relieved that little Jimmy made it back to Earth unharmed after saving the world! [heh heh!]

Technicolour Dreaming

The third show of the year and we’re getting a feel for this ‘amalgamation of two shows into one’ thingee! There was current stuff from bands such as the Surf Zombies, Earth and Japandroids, a selection of 60’s music ranging from the Byrds to Svensk to the Brain [a pre-Giles, Giles & Fripp project by the Giles brothers], and a plethora of tracks in between from artists such as Echo & the Bunnymen, Wooden Shjips, Suede, Tyrnaround, Jennifer Gentle, Custard and T.Rex. Our feature this week was a 7”EP from the Fruits de Mer label called The League of Psychedelic Gentlemen, consisting of a track each by four such gentlemen, including nick nicely and Anton Barbeau... we’ll be playing the other two next week! We finished the show with the 1999 single by Jason Falkner which, in a just world, would have been a huge hit, but in this one was torpedoed by ‘major label’ shenanigans... his back catalogue is well worth checking out as he writes and plays great pop music, in the classic sense of the word!
