Technicolour Dreaming

At Three D Radio we are lucky enough to receive donations of CDs and vinyl to fill gaps in our collection, often from other announcers (I'm sure regular listeners will have heard me, and others, mentioning the latest release donated by Andrew K, whose show follows Technicolour Dreaming), and sometimes from generous members of the public. So I was very pleased to discover the compilation "Monster a Go-Go: Teen Trash from Psychedelic Tokyo '66-'69" had appeared as a new acquisition, and that it had not one, but two tracks by The Spiders! Some years ago, I had seen a some excerpts from the 1968 movie "Go Forward!" and a few other comedies that featured The Spiders (apparently there are thirteen in total!), but had no idea of the names of the songs. I've now discovered that one of my favourites was "Nati Bati Yi", which is included on the compilation (obscure fact - backing vocalist and tambourine player Masaaki Sakai might be better known as the lead character in the TV series "Monkey"). Technicolour Dreaming

A real mixed bag of music this time round, with way more 1960's USA singles than in recent weeks - which can only be a good thing!! - and only a few new releases (The Warlocks' "Songs from the Pale Eclipse", Beaulieu Porch's "Sarum Sounds", Anton Barbeau's "Magic Act", Garden Gate's "Dark Harvest" and the latest single from The Embrooks, "Helen" pretty much covers it). Technicolour Dreaming

This week’s edition was bookended with tracks by Welsh band Soft Hearted Scientists, who have rapidly wormed their way into our “fave band list” since we discovered their 2013  album “False Lights” and then began working our way through their back-catalogue. Then there were our “just-arrived-in-the-mail” features, the first of which, “The Drop” LP by Denmark’s Pinkunoizu, came in a very cool gatefold sleeve and has barely been off the turntable all week. Though it was released late last year and has taken us a while to get our own copy, we found it to be a brilliant slice of modern psychedelia and well worth the wait – thoroughly recommended! The other new arrival was the debut album from Doug Tuttle, formerly of Cat & Brat faves, MMOSS, whose two albums have frequently reverberated around our house over the past year or so. Now recording under his own name this album finds him further refining his idiosyncratic take on psychedelic music, with a textured 60’s pop feel more evident than in the past. Catchy yet woozy with lots of his trademark reverb and effects, it, like the afore-mentioned Pinkunoizu, keeps insinuating itself into your mind more with each hearing –we’ll definitely be playing more tracks from both albums for you in coming weeks! Technicolour Dreaming

There were plenty of recent, new and soon-to-be-released songs featured on this edition of the show from the likes of Temples, Fogbound, the Luck of Eden Hall and Vintage Cucumber, as well as local releases by Black Coral and  Bubonic Babe, plus the usual plethora of tracks from the past, this week ranging from the 60’s psychedelic beat of the Netherlands’ Mother’s Love, the Standells and C.A.Quintet, the ‘exploito’ sitar sounds of Rajput & the Sepoy Mutiny, on to local punk legends, the U-Bombs, and up to Italy’s Strange Flowers, Russia’s Mystic Brew and Canada’s Sheepman, amongst others. But the primary feature this week was the up-coming series of releases from UK vinyl record label Fruits de Mer which are due out in March. Especially grabbing our immediate attention [apart from inspirational mottoes such as “a smile, a song and a nice piece of cod”!] were the brilliant version of Jefferson Airplane’s “White Rabbit” by Welsh band the Honey Pot, Schizo Fun Addict’s intriguing take on the theme from 70’s Italian horror movie “Suspiria”, originally done by Goblin, and a new interpretation of Lewis Carroll’s “Jabberwocky” by Swedish duo, Us & Them...
