Sitars, theremin and mellotron, backwards guitar, phasing and fuzz, fringes and mohawks, paisley, black, velvet and leather, feedback, bass and drone, beads, berets and safety-pins, Shindig! and Creem, 3 chord wonders, teenage symphonies and snarl, Rickenbacker, Farfisa and 4-track recorders... onstage at CBGB's, Max's Kansas City or the Trip, the Roundhouse, the 100 Club or the Crystal Ballroom, Catcher's, Big Daddy's or the Squatters Arms.... and the Cat and the Brat on 3D Radio!
Three D Radio announcer, MeganCat (up until recently with her husband, the late Peter Brat)lives in "The BratHaus" a rural seaside home about 100km from Adelaide on South Australia's scenic Fleurieu Peninsula. Veteran musician Peter, and artist/musician Megan, were long-time DJs onThree D Radio 93.7fm, Adelaide's eclectic independent music station. Together Peter & Megan, known as "The Cat and The Brat" created this blog to allow listeners to review the playlists of their radio show, "Technicolour Dreaming", watch clips of selected songs and simply join them in the enjoyment of their favourite music... psychedelia, 60's garage, surf, punk/post-punk, pop, folk-rock, glam, 'Krautrock', goth, 80's electro... and much more!
But The Cat is carrying on the tradition, with guest co-presenters, and "Technicolour Dreaming" will continue in the same format, drawing from the huge "Cat & Brat" music collection, with the addition of new releases and reissues to keep things current. The Brat is hugely missed, but the show must go on, as he wanted...

Some tasty treats from the wonderful Fruits de Mer Records arrived in my letterbox, so of course I just had to play ALL of them on the show this week - how could I resist! The current crop of soon-to-be-released vinyl included the latest single from the sixties legendsJuly (an exclusive extended version, and a demo mix of "Can I Go Back Again" a song that appeared in it's original form on their new album "Resurrection"); a coloured vinyl 4-track 7" 33rpm EP (phew!) from Crystal Jacqueline, titled "Morning Dew"; and finally Sendelica's latest spacerock epic, "The Cromlech Chronicles" LP, with which I closed the show by playing all 20 minutes worth of Side 2 - because I can! Other new releases included Doug Tuttle's"It Calls on Me", and another track off The Luck of Eden Hall's wonderful "The Acceleration of Time" plus a swag of songs from 2015 which I've only just got around to playing..... So here's the playlist, with not nearly as many clips as usual, cos I can't include what doesn't exist - a pitfall of playing relatively "unknown" bands, but at least the music's out there to enjoy.

Sometimes this blog comes together so easily, other times it is exceptionallytesting. This is one of those testing times! A diverse range of bands from round the world - Chile, Sweden, Switzerland, Russia and the Netherlands - found their way onto the Technicolour Dreamingplaylist this week, but then again, that’s nothing unusual! This was really a show of old favourites, both Harry’s and TheCat’s, and one of those particular favourites is Adelaide stalwarts, the MoltingVultures, who are playing one of their infrequent gigs at the Grace Emily this Saturday night 26th September, and bringing with them Melbourne’s rock’n’roll garage swamp-meisters Red Motors, - so don’t miss it!!

Apologies for the late posting
and abbreviated introduction ..... does “technical
difficulties” strike a chord?Perhaps
more of a dis-chord!? Anyway, this week
we ventured into NewZealand’s
golden era of psychedelia, which ran far longer than elsewhere, goingfrom about 1966 through to the early 1970’s,
with a supportive industry of small
studios recording this output on vinyl, with most being distributed a large
company, EMI and preserved for posterity. Hence the large number of bands and songs from
all over New Zealand to be found in the on-going “A
Day In My Mind’s Mind” compilation series which we featured as our “Compilation of the Week”. Of course we also played
our usual selection of old and new from around the world for your
edification... so, barring any further technical problems, we’ll join you again
next week, whilst in the meantime.....

The first few songs played this
week showed the way for the following two hours – a mix featuring a fair
smattering of 80’s oddities and faves such as the
Leopards and the Prisoners, some 60’s
goodness from, for example, Australia’s Oak Apple
Day and the Looking Glasses, seasoned
with a plethora of recent tunes from the likes of Switzerland’s Balduin, Wheat Fields,
Sky Picnic and the Red
Plastic Buddha to name but a few. Then there was our “Band of the Week”
... the Hollies are too often dismissed as
an “oldies radio staple” while the duration, variety and sheer brilliance of
their 60’s output is ignored... along with the
Beach Boys they were THE supreme harmonisers and, like the Beatles, seemed able to keep effortlessly
throwing out pop masterpieces - so yes, we salute the Hollies! So, until next
week, let’s all ponder the VanillaFudge’s timeless query – “Where
Is My Mind?”......
..... here is the
playlist, with a few diverting images while you ponder.....

These Things” 2013 Finland)
