Three D Radio announcer, Megan Cat (up until recently with her husband, the late Peter Brat) lives in "The BratHaus" a rural seaside home about 100km from Adelaide on South Australia's scenic Fleurieu Peninsula.
Veteran musician Peter, and artist/musician Megan, were long-time DJs on Three D Radio 93.7fm
, Adelaide's eclectic independent music station.
Together Peter & Megan, known as "The Cat and The Brat" created this blog to allow listeners to review the playlists of their radio show, "Technicolour Dreaming" , watch clips of selected songs and simply join them in the enjoyment of their favourite music... psychedelia, 60's garage,
surf, punk/post-punk, pop, folk-rock, glam, 'Krautrock', goth, 80's electro... and much more!
But The Cat is carrying on the tradition, with guest co-presenters, and "Technicolour Dreaming" will continue in the same format, drawing from the huge "Cat & Brat" music collection, with the addition of new releases and reissues to keep things current. The Brat is hugely missed, but the show must go on, as he wanted...

Technicolour Dreaming

Just when you think that the recent spate of musical heroes departing this earth has abated, along comes a very big lightning bolt from the blue - David Bowie has joined them. Not a promising start for the year, but a fitting reason to re-listen to Bowie's collected works, and play some favourites on the radio. Indeed, on the day in question, by the time 1pm had rolled around, there had been a massive 29 Bowie tracks aired, with not a single repetition amongst them! Just goes to show that Bowie's different stylistic twists and turns appealed to a very wide range of fans over the years. Sadly, so many inspirational musicians are approaching an age where their mortality is becoming more and more apparent - as a friend recently wrote, someone should go find Keith Richards and roll him up in bubble-wrap, pronto!
..and here's the playlist for this week's show, clips and all... David Bowie - Scream Like a Baby ("Scary Monsters" LP 1980 UK)
Vespero - Scream thy Last Scream [Pink Floyd] ("A Momentary Lapse of Vinyl" 2014 Russia)

Crystal Jacqueline - Somebody to Love [Jefferson Airplane] ("Sun Arise" 2015 UK)
Soft Hearted Scientists - Diving Bell ("Uncanny Tales from the Everyday Undergrowth" 2015reissue Wales UK)
Papy - Toi le Shazam (7" single 1967 France)
Fatty Nautty - Tumba Part 2 ("Fatty Nautty EP" 1968 France)

Technicolour Dreaming

Rather than a band, we had Dutch solo performer Jacco Gardner as our “Artiste of the Week” in this edition of Technicolour Dreaming. Regular listeners will be aware that we have featured his music quite frequently since we first heard his “Clear the Air” single early last year, the song later appearing on his excellent debut album “Cabinet of Curiosities”. Whilst clearly in thrall to 60’s psychedelic pop, Jacco has managed to create his own inspired take on the genre, letting the strength of his song writing shine through – like his predecessors, he sure knows how to write a catchy pop song with twists and unexpected turns a-plenty. Wonderful music.... and his ever-growing renown is well-deserved – hopefully he’ll bring his band on tour to Australia soon! Also featured again this week was the UK record label Fruits de Mer, including tracks by FdM stalwarts such as Spain’s excellent Stay and Welsh outfit Schnauser amongst others, the two mentioned above taken from the latest promo sampler “Friends of the Fish vol. 1” which reminds us of the diversity of the label’s output and which we’ll certainly be plundering over coming months – great stuff! Also played this week were new tracks from Espectrostatic, Sky Picnic and Dodson & Fogg [featuring the Young OnesNigel Planer] plus a few ‘blasts from the past’  by the likes of the Sorrows, Holland’s After Tea, the United States of America and Peru’s We All Together doing a Badfinger cover, taken from their sole 1972 LP.

There was much more of course, as always, so until next week.....

Technicolour Dreaming

Alongside some new releases by local Adelaide favourites Slingshot Dragster and the Dunes we also played tracks from the brand new albums from Dodson & Fogg, Ty Segall and White Fence, plus single A-sides from House of Fire and the Brian Jonestown Massacre’s ‘tambourine guy’ Joel Gion, King Penguin’s brilliant Byrds cover from Fruits de Mer’s lavish “7 & 7 Is” singles boxset, which was released this week. We also featured songs by Les Big Byrd, the Chemistry Set, Swiss psychedelecist Balduin and 60’s classics by Gary Walker & the Rain and the Millennium, as well as a previously unreleased track by the Velvet Underground, recorded in 1969 but only released in 1984 on the “VU” album. Last, but certainly not least, we celebrated Beaulieu Porch as our “Band of the Week”. Consisting of the compositions and recordings of Englishman Simon Berry, Beaulieu Porch has released two albums, an anthology and several singles, both vinyl and digital, on his own Tillsammans Records label, all of which he recently made available as free downloads on his bandcamp page. His modern, idiosyncratic take on vintage psychedelia has been hailed in magazines such as “Shindig!” and “Mojo” plus blogs like “The Active Listener” and various “Top 10 Albums of the Year” lists – not bad for a bloke recording alone in his home studio, and we are eagerly awaiting the completion of his new album which he reports is “about halfway there”. In the meantime we strongly advise downloading the back-catalogue – you won’t regret it! – and also checking out his clips on youtube, also made by him at home, a few of which we’ve posted below. So, until next week, it’s “cheerio” from the Cat and the Brat.....
