Technicolour Dreaming

Serendipity is a much-touted term, but when it happens, it really makes you realise that everything (in the musical world, anyway) is connected - sorry, I'm getting all mystical here! Quite unintentionally, my serendipitous connection this week is a fellow by the name of Allan Crockford - and he pulls all the strings together by being an original member of The Prisoners, producer of the first album by fellow-Medway scenesters The Dentists, and he's currently writing and performing with The Galileo 7. All bands which I played this week, with The Galileo 7 having just released their new album "Live-O-Graphic", which was recorded in a working lithographic press (in the workshop, not the actual press itself).

I don't normally do reviews, but these "nearly live" tracks are as good as it gets - compared to "really live", that is! A stupendous amount of energy drips from every cut - a touch faster than the originals, but every bit as accomplished. The swirling organ is a highlight, along with the precise vocal harmonies and pounding, volcanic drums and bass powering it all along - if this is "nearly live", then being at an actual performance would obviously be an event that will endure in the memory, for those ever lucky enough to see the band in the flesh (sadly, the Antipodes are a touch far away for me to get to a gig in the UK). This is The Galileo 7 as you've never heard them recorded before - and as fantastic an introduction to their back-catalogue as you could ever hope to own. And so endeth my rave.

Also on the show (phew, I'm out of breath - and words), I featured the first installment of the Mega Dodo Singles Club - 2 limited-edition slices of 7 inch vinyl goodness from The Octopus Syng and The Honey Pot (the former a lovely strawberry-red colour - I do love my coloured vinyl!), complete with a membership card, colour band picture-postcards, download cards, sticker and a tiny bee! And I'm not even going to get started on the "A Seance at Syd's" hardback book and double-CD combo (also from the nice people at Mega Dodo records) - think I might leave that til next week, so I can do it justice - it's just such a lovely thing to behold!

Technicolour Dreaming

Well, this has got to be (nearly) a first for Technicolour Dreaming - a video clip for every single song … well, there were two bands that I couldn’t find a clip for, but that’s pretty good! 

This week there were two brand, spanking new releases to play tracks from - Sydney’s The Dandelion, with the their wonderfully named “Seeds, Flowers and the Magical Powers of the Dandelion”, which sounds as good as the title is long; and a great new Mega Dodo release from Lisbon band Beautify Junkyards, whose CD “The Beast Shouted Love” was recorded outside for the large part, and this is definitely reflected in the mood that they have managed to create - great summer listening! And this show is dedicated to Peter Brat, who would have been celebrating his birthday today - so enjoy!

Technicolour Dreaming

We went from Perth, Australia and Copenhagen, Denmark in 2014 back through to mid-60’s Los Angeles and many points in between on this week’s show, including new tracks from Mt Mountain, Chad & the Meatbodies, the Allah-Las and Paul Messis plus some older faves from Devo, Sun Dial and the Zombies. Our “Band of the Week” feature highlighted Finnish psychedelecists Octopus Syng who first came to our attention via songs on various Fruits de Mer label compilations and have now released their new album, “Reverberating Garden Number 7”, on Mega Dodo, another fine independent UK label. Technicolour Dreaming

Before we begin, the Cat and the Brat would like to thank fellow 3D Radio announcers “harry” and Michael for stepping into the breach and doing the past couple of shows for us with such panache – great music from both of you! And while we were away, of course, a big pile of new releases awaited us at the P.O., only some of which we were able to fit into this week’s show, so look out for lots of new music in the weeks to come. But back to this show!  We started with a track for the long-anticipated new album from Finland’s veteran psychedelecists Octopus Syng, newly released on the UK’s “Mega Dodo” record company, who also put out the “Barnburner” split-EP by Mordecai Smyth and Icarus Peel. We also celebrated the “Fruits de Mer” vinyl-only label’s “Crabstock 2014” series of shows in the USA, Finland and Wales by playing tracks by some of the featured artists such as the Luck of Eden Hall, Sendelica and Sky Picnic as well as a few selections from the FdM back-catalogue.
