Sitars, theremin and mellotron, backwards guitar, phasing and fuzz, fringes and mohawks, paisley, black, velvet and leather, feedback, bass and drone, beads, berets and safety-pins, Shindig! and Creem, 3 chord wonders, teenage symphonies and snarl, Rickenbacker, Farfisa and 4-track recorders... onstage at CBGB's, Max's Kansas City or the Trip, the Roundhouse, the 100 Club or the Crystal Ballroom, Catcher's, Big Daddy's or the Squatters Arms.... and the Cat and the Brat on 3D Radio!
Three D Radio announcer, MeganCat (up until recently with her husband, the late Peter Brat)lives in "The BratHaus" a rural seaside home about 100km from Adelaide on South Australia's scenic Fleurieu Peninsula. Veteran musician Peter, and artist/musician Megan, were long-time DJs onThree D Radio 93.7fm, Adelaide's eclectic independent music station. Together Peter & Megan, known as "The Cat and The Brat" created this blog to allow listeners to review the playlists of their radio show, "Technicolour Dreaming", watch clips of selected songs and simply join them in the enjoyment of their favourite music... psychedelia, 60's garage, surf, punk/post-punk, pop, folk-rock, glam, 'Krautrock', goth, 80's electro... and much more!
But The Cat is carrying on the tradition, with guest co-presenters, and "Technicolour Dreaming" will continue in the same format, drawing from the huge "Cat & Brat" music collection, with the addition of new releases and reissues to keep things current. The Brat is hugely missed, but the show must go on, as he wanted...
This week, on the stinking-hot first day of autumn, I featured a couple of new releases from the wonderful UK vinyl-only label, Fruits de Mer - Sendelica's sublime, surreal, and lengthy take on Bowie's "Ziggy Stardust", and a track from the new 7" EP from Italian singer-songwriter Claudio Cataldi, "Here She Comes Now". Technicolour Dreaming had a rest this week, as it was time for Three D Radio'sTop 100+1 countdown, which is held on the Australia Day public holiday each year, and features 12 hours of the most-played new releases for 2015, and interviews with local bands. Three D announcers get to choose the music that they play, as there are no set playlists, so the countdown features a very diverse range of musical styles, and a very high proportion of local Adelaide artists.
So it was into this musical maelstrom that I was thrown, with co-announcer Jamie (from Thursday's excellent drive-time show "Follow the Sound") at the controls, to interview 11 of the 16 bands that fell into our 2-4pm time-slot. Much chaos and hilarity ensued, with a revolving door of musicians coming and going - before we knew it, our 2 hours was over, and it was time for a well deserved beer!
I've included clips for as many of the Adelaide bands that I can find - some aren't for the song that we played, but will give you an idea of their style of music. Enjoy!

And for the full listing of the chart, as well as photos of the fun and mayhem had by all at the Top 100+1, take a look at Three D Radio's Facebook page . Thanks also to Spoz, ranter about Adelaide music extraordinaire, for a couple of the clips that I've used this week.
And to finish things off, here's a photo of a very sun-burnt Megan Cat, and the back of Jamie's head, interviewing The Clangers. Thanks to Michael Hunter for the picture!
Well, this has got to be (nearly) a first for TechnicolourDreaming - a video clip for every single song … well, there were two bands that I couldn’t find a clip for, but that’s pretty good!
This week there were two brand, spanking new releases to play tracks from - Sydney’s The Dandelion, with the their wonderfully named “Seeds, Flowers and the Magical Powers of the Dandelion”, which sounds as good as the title is long; and a great new Mega Dodo release from Lisbon band Beautify Junkyards, whose CD “The Beast Shouted Love” was recorded outside for the large part, and this is definitely reflected in the mood that they have managed to create - great summer listening! And this show is dedicated to Peter Brat, who would have been celebrating his birthday today - so enjoy!
Again this week, we had a
pleasant surprise awaiting us at our local general store/post office in the
form of a package from State Records in the
UK, containing the Thanes latest single plus
the new self-titled Higher State album. On
the local front, we also featured a track by the lovely LeighStarDust from “the Wedding EP”
[which also features new husband Denni’s
band Brillig] as well as a cut from the 12”
vinyl LP by Tea, plus one from 60’s Adelaide
legends, the Twilights, taken from the lavish
CD reissue of a few years back which we found at Mr
V Records here in Adelaide, which, with a few other remaining independent
record shops including Clarity, Funhouse and Rev Records, are still reliable sources of cool,
interesting music – there’s nothing quite like flicking through stacks of vinyl
and CDs, holding & examining their covers while music whirls around you and
engaging in discussions with other music lovers... and with the ongoing vinyl
revival, there are still places like these to be sought out and found. But we digress...
and with the end of the year rapidly approaching we thought we should begin adding
selections from our numerous “favourite finds of 2013”
into our playlists over the coming weeks.....
..... so here is

A mixed bag of tunes was on our menu again this week, starting with Traffic’s second single... still a great song

tracks taken off slightly older albums by
the likes of Espers, Asteroid #4 and the Frowning
Clouds, as well as a brilliant Beatles’ cover by Pete Shelley and a classic from the Psychedelic
Fursdebut LP,
