Technicolour Dreaming

Again this week, we had a pleasant surprise awaiting us at our local general store/post office in the form of a package from State Records in the UK, containing the Thanes latest single plus the new self-titled Higher State album. On the local front, we also featured a track by the lovely LeighStarDust from “the Wedding EP” [which also features new husband Denni’s band Brillig] as well as a cut from the 12” vinyl LP by Tea, plus one from 60’s Adelaide legends, the Twilights, taken from the lavish CD reissue of a few years back which we found at Mr V Records here in Adelaide, which, with a few other remaining independent record shops including Clarity, Funhouse and Rev Records, are still reliable sources of cool, interesting music – there’s nothing quite like flicking through stacks of vinyl and CDs, holding & examining their covers while music whirls around you and engaging in discussions with other music lovers... and with the ongoing vinyl revival, there are still places like these to be sought out and found. But we digress... and with the end of the year rapidly approaching we thought we should begin adding selections from our numerous “favourite finds of 2013” into our playlists over the coming weeks.....

Sometimes the best-laid plans for a show just disappear once you go to air, which is what happened this week! A phone call from a listener requesting an Atlantics song led us into some 60’s kicks of (primarily) the Australian kind, from Normie Rowe and the Easybeats to the Red Angel Panic and the Hergs amongst others. But different eras and locales were not to be ignored... new music from Canada’s Metz and the UK’s Galileo 7, 80’s singles by the Dentists and Close Lobsters, plus a brand new demo from Adelaide’s Alpha Beta Fox and the return of Go Kart Mozart... most of these were not on our original agenda, but hey, who really wants agendas anyway! Sadly, there were two more RIPs to announce and commemorate - Bob Welch, ex-Fleetwood Mac guitarist and Eduard Khil, the Russian artist behind probably the most successful meme of recent times - quite different musically but both making their own mark on the world.    Elsewhere in the show, we continued with some favourite themes such as bizarre covers, rare singles from any place and any time, Australian obscurities, even some current Welsh music from Houdini Dax and Colorama.  Indeed, we - that is, all three "dots" - even saw fit to include a Wa Wa Nee single.  Have we no shame?  That's a rhetorical question, btw.
