Technicolour Dreaming

There were lots of “cover versions” on the show this week, including ones by bands such as MMOSS, Pesky Gee and the Scientists, to celebrate the arrival of the promo-CDs for the Fruits de Mer Records upcoming ‘September Collection’, centring on their “7 & 7 Is” boxset of seven vinyl 7”singles, featuring current bands each doing ‘covers’ of their favourite songs by a particular US 60’s band. For example, we played one side of the single by King Penguin who chose a pair of songs by the Byrds, and another by the Chemistry Set, who picked Love to cover – we’ll be playing further selections over coming weeks [for more details about upcoming releases check out the FdM website here] Another part of the new collection is the debut single release of Simones “Majic Ship” which we also played – it’s previously only been available on limited edition LPs so hopefully this great song will gain wider exposure now as a single. Amongst other releases we were pleased to be able to share was “Balloon Age” by New Electric Ride, a young UK band who are currently doing a major UK & European tour and getting great reviews in the process. The album is “on high rotation” in our house, as is the brilliant “We Worshipped Cats” LP by Swedish psychedelecists Les Big Byrd – both are serious contenders for “Best Album of 2014”! Another contender, and a welcome surprise in the P.O. box, was a pre-release copy of the latest Soft Hearted Scientists album “The Slow Cyclone”, which is due for release at the end of September; this Welsh band are a “Cat & Brat all-time fave” and yet they just keep getting better and better, so have a listen to them – you won’t be disappointed! Then there was this edition’s “Band of the Week” – the Red Plastic Buddha – who hail from Chicago in the US and who have been making great music for nearly ten years, with their latest LP, “Songs For Mara”, about to be released and hopefully gaining them new fans – one of the tracks we featured, “Little White Pills” is easily one of the catchiest songs we’ve heard all year and features Curvey [from fellow Chicagoans, the Luck of Eden Hall] guesting on guitar – great stuff! Technicolour Dreaming

Our fondness for ‘suites’ will be familiar to regular listeners to Technicolour Dreaming, so it will come as no surprise that this week’s feature was ‘The Saga of Rodney Toady’ by Giles, Giles & Fripp in its entirety.... with recent psych and garage by bands such as les Liminanas, Vibravoid and Nothing People through some glam, courtesy of T.Rex and Shudder To Think [from the Velvet Goldmine movie], UK punk by Wire and Adam & the Ants, the odd slice of sunshine pop from a couple of Curt Boettcher-related projects plus a number of goodies from the likes of Lotus, Beaches and the Green Circles to round out the show....

Technicolour Dreaming

We had our inaugural interview in the new 3D studios this week... and the esteemed interviewee was singer/guitarist Matt from Adelaide band Brillig. He brought us in a ‘hot off the presses’ copy of their soon-to-be-released new album “I Ain’t Ever Gonna See The Sea’ to give our listeners a sneak preview and to promote their upcoming shows at the Adelaide Fringe Festival. We also featured some of the new music that has appeared in our postbox recently, such as the swirling psych pop of the debut album by England’s Beaulieu Porch and the title track of the third album by Swedish band, the Amazing, before focusing on a selection of Australian and local 1960’s garage and psych. We played a track from the new early Bee Gees retrospective as well as bands such as the Purple Hearts, the Hergs and Procession and included a tribute to the late Kevin Peek by playing his classic ‘Then I Heard the Fire Sing’ by his band, the James Taylor Move. We came back to the 21^st century to finish with a couple of recent live recordings by Adelaide favourites Dieselwitch and Slingshot Dragster and a very cool Rolling Stones cover by the Gaye Blades on a Norton Records 7”single from 2007.....
