Technicolour Dreaming

An appropriate first track - "I Been Gone", cos I certainly have been...The Cat is back!! I've been on-air for the most part during my on-line absence, but the pressures of work, and the Christmas / New Year's "busy season" means that I've had extremely limited time lately to devote to the blog. When you need to weigh up whether you have time for finding more film-clips or making sure you've got clean clothes for work in the morning, which is only a few hours away, somethings gotta give! Obscured By...

Though this week’s hosts, the Cat & the Brat, are a ‘duo’, this show was mostly about singles... the 7” vinyl kind ... and sometimes, their b-sides! From the Syssys and the Revillos to Psychic TV and Metal Urbain, we voyaged from decade to decade and country to country to bring them to you, even including a b-side featuring ubiquitous 60’s Sydney DJ, Ward ‘Pally’ Austin on the debut single by Python Lee Jackson! Not that we forgot the EP and LP formats either, with rarities from the likes of Frog Hollow and the Urinals to the Cosmic Dead and Apryl Fool... and with our predilection for boxsets, how could we fail to play a selection from “the Lost Tapes” set by Can? All in all, a singular show...

Technicolour Dreaming

As always, we wandered through genres and decades, beginning with an Australian 60’s classic by the Black Diamonds, followed later in the show by an American classic of the same era by the Sonics. We featured an Eno track from his brilliant 1973 debut LP, a fave from Norway’s Deleted Waveform Gatherings, a very cool track from the debut EP by new Adelaide band Fabels and a great version of ‘Holocaust’ by This Mortal Coil featuring Howard Devoto, as well as some Black Hollies, the debut single by French punks Metal Urbain and even a spot of ‘guru-bashing’ from the Beatles, before finishing with Thee Oh Sees, our January “Band of the Month”... all brought to you by the Cat and the Brat on 3D Radio...

Technicolour Dreaming

Beginning with the likes of Spacemen 3 and Adelaide’s Asteroid Belt, the Cat and the Brat played some 60’s garage from the Chocolate Watchband and the Plague, some 70’s punk from X Ray Spex and France’s Metal Urbain (the very first single ever to be released by the UK’s Rough Trade Records), a selection of recent releases including Adelaide’s Isomer and DieselWitch and much, much more... all in all, the regular Technicolour Dreaming.....

This week on Obscured by... again there was a solo ‘DOT’... this time Peter Brat. I followed our regular policy of rarities and obscurities from around the world in various genres and from varied sources... including a ‘live on TV’ song from Australian 70’s band Kelly, a previously unreleased 1982 Kimberly Rew track with the Waves [later known as Katrina & the Waves], the first ever Rough Trade record [by French electro-punks Metal Urbain, who I was lucky enough to see in London in 1977], the 1978 b-side teaming Eno and UK punks Snatch [Judy Nylon & Patti Palladin] and which also featured Phil Collins on drums, 80’s psych from the United States of Existence, a couple of long tracks from the debut albums by Germany’s Guru Guru and Can, some Australian 60’s grooviness, the song by Luke Haines that ought to have featured in TV show “Spooks”, and much, much more...
