Three D Radio announcer, Megan Cat (up until recently with her husband, the late Peter Brat) lives in "The BratHaus" a rural seaside home about 100km from Adelaide on South Australia's scenic Fleurieu Peninsula.
Veteran musician Peter, and artist/musician Megan, were long-time DJs on Three D Radio 93.7fm
, Adelaide's eclectic independent music station.
Together Peter & Megan, known as "The Cat and The Brat" created this blog to allow listeners to review the playlists of their radio show, "Technicolour Dreaming" , watch clips of selected songs and simply join them in the enjoyment of their favourite music... psychedelia, 60's garage,
surf, punk/post-punk, pop, folk-rock, glam, 'Krautrock', goth, 80's electro... and much more!
But The Cat is carrying on the tradition, with guest co-presenters, and "Technicolour Dreaming" will continue in the same format, drawing from the huge "Cat & Brat" music collection, with the addition of new releases and reissues to keep things current. The Brat is hugely missed, but the show must go on, as he wanted...

Technicolour Dreaming

We began this week’s edition with a tribute to the late Ian McLagan, keyboard-player extraordinaire with the Small Faces, and, later, the Faces.... plus appearing on a plethora of other bands’ records as an ‘in-demand’ sessioneer and playing ‘live’ until now, being about to tour with Nick Lowe. I was fortunate enough to see him play with the Small Faces during their notorious Australian tour with the Who... it was one of the first concerts I went to and, as a piano-player myself, his commanding style certainly made a big impression!  A brilliant career – he will be missed! We continued our 60’s venture for a while with the Twilights and Ultimate Spinach, plus a great version of the “Avengers’ Theme” by Icarus Peel, before returning to present day Adelaide with the Archers and then veering off into our usual forage through the world of psychedelia and associated obscurities. Towards the end of the show we featured King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard as our “Band of the Week”... they are a great band whose career we have followed since the early days in Geelong until their recent successes in Europe and the UK, where they have been signed by the prestigious “Heavenly” label for the release of their much-anticipated new album. Good on ‘em!! We finished with Brittany psychedelecists Sudden Death of Stars whose latest album rewards with each listening – a gem, and certainly a contender for our “releases of 2014” list. Until next week then.....

Technicolour Dreaming

This week the Cat & the Brat curated the annual RADIOTHON (extended) edition of Technicolour Dreaming and we would like to thank the many listeners and bands who have subscribed to this fine station, helping to keep 3D Radio (and us!) on-air to play music you won’t hear anywhere else in this city (and indeed few places elsewhere!) and to expose and promote local and Australian music to the wider world, whether it be the latest releases or almost-forgotten 60’s singles, and all stops in between. Apropos of this, we played new tracks from Melbourne’s Pony Face, Perth’s Tame Impala off-shoot Pond and the soon-to-be-released EP by the Dunes, 60’s singles by the Loved Ones, Chris Malcolm, the Purple Hearts and the final release by the Twilights, throwing in 80’s Adelaide icons Toyland and the Spikes, an early brillig album track and a couple of surf instrumentals by Slingshot Dragster and DieselWitch along the way. Casting our net wider, we also played tracks from new releases by Sleepy Suns, Ty Segall and Asteroid No 4, as well as a ‘promo-teaser’ from the Galileo 7, (featuring Medway legend Allan Crockford of the Prisoners, Thee Headcoats etc) from their debut LP, due for release in September on State Records – the cover is worth the price alone! (check it out at  http://thegalileo7.fourfour.com/home  ) Finally, after two and a half hours of music plus Radiothon messages and giveaways, we ended the show with a song from the brilliant Baterz, our currentArtiste of the Month”..... and don’t forget, it’s not too late to subscribe to 3D Radio (and go into the prize draw!) – just go to  http://threedradio.com  for details!

Technicolour Dreaming

This week, it was a Brat alone on Technicolour Dreaming. But the sounds remained the same... 60’s Australian pop, garage and psych, new releases from cool Adelaide bands such as brillig and the Sea Thieves, plus a sprinkling of favourites like Joy Zipper, Kelley Stoltz and Death In June. Also, responding to requests, I played the whole of the 2nd side of the “Ogdens’ Nut Gone Flake” album by the Small Faces from 1968, the ‘Happiness Stan’ saga, with narration by Stanley Unwin intertwined with its songs. And of course, I finished with the penultimate ‘Monkees Song of the Week’...
