Sitars, theremin and mellotron, backwards guitar, phasing and fuzz, fringes and mohawks, paisley, black, velvet and leather, feedback, bass and drone, beads, berets and safety-pins, Shindig! and Creem, 3 chord wonders, teenage symphonies and snarl, Rickenbacker, Farfisa and 4-track recorders... onstage at CBGB's, Max's Kansas City or the Trip, the Roundhouse, the 100 Club or the Crystal Ballroom, Catcher's, Big Daddy's or the Squatters Arms.... and the Cat and the Brat on 3D Radio!
Three D Radio announcer, MeganCat (up until recently with her husband, the late Peter Brat)lives in "The BratHaus" a rural seaside home about 100km from Adelaide on South Australia's scenic Fleurieu Peninsula. Veteran musician Peter, and artist/musician Megan, were long-time DJs onThree D Radio 93.7fm, Adelaide's eclectic independent music station. Together Peter & Megan, known as "The Cat and The Brat" created this blog to allow listeners to review the playlists of their radio show, "Technicolour Dreaming", watch clips of selected songs and simply join them in the enjoyment of their favourite music... psychedelia, 60's garage, surf, punk/post-punk, pop, folk-rock, glam, 'Krautrock', goth, 80's electro... and much more!
But The Cat is carrying on the tradition, with guest co-presenters, and "Technicolour Dreaming" will continue in the same format, drawing from the huge "Cat & Brat" music collection, with the addition of new releases and reissues to keep things current. The Brat is hugely missed, but the show must go on, as he wanted...
This show leaned more towards garage than psych for a little while, compliments of lots of new goodies to play - Adelaide's The Systemaddicts kicked things off with their latest album, "Broken Hearted on the Nullarbor", followed by a couple of new releases from State Records, by The Embrooks (UK) and The Missing Souls (France), and squeezed in the middle was a track from Juliette Seizure and the Tremor Dollsdebut long-player, "Chewing Out Your Rhythm on My Bubblegum."Somehow I managed to play THREE Tyrnaround tracks, twice from their classic 12" EP, as well as a cover of the title-track, "Colour Your Mind" by Vibravoid! And I musn't forget a selection from Sidewalk Society's new 4-track 7" EP, which is one of Fruits De Mer Records latest crop of releases - with more to be featured next week. Some "soon-to-be" releases from Heaters, Elkhorn and Drakkar Nowhere rounded out the show: luckily this entry didn't take as long to put together as the last one! Enjoy!

This
week the Cat
& the Brat
curated the annualRADIOTHON (extended) edition of
Technicolour Dreaming and we would like to thank the many listeners and bands who
have subscribed to this fine station, helping to keep 3D Radio (and us!) on-air to play music you won’t hear anywhere else in this city (and indeed few places elsewhere!) and to
expose and promote local and Australian music to the wider world, whether it be the latest
releases or almost-forgotten 60’s singles, and all stops in between. Apropos of this, we played new tracks from Melbourne’s Pony
Face, Perth’s Tame Impala off-shoot Pond and the soon-to-be-released
EP by the Dunes, 60’s singles by the Loved Ones, Chris Malcolm, the Purple Hearts and the
final release by the Twilights, throwing in 80’s AdelaideiconsToyland and the Spikes, an early brilligalbum
track and a couple of surf instrumentals by Slingshot Dragster
and DieselWitch along the way. Casting our net wider, we also played
tracks from new releases by Sleepy Suns, Ty Segall and Asteroid No 4, as well as
a ‘promo-teaser’ from the Galileo 7,
(featuring Medway legendAllan Crockford of the Prisoners, Thee Headcoats etc)
from their debut LP, due for release in September on State
Records – the cover is worth the price alone! (check it outat http://thegalileo7.fourfour.com/home) Finally, after two
and a half hours of music plus Radiothonmessages and
giveaways, we ended the show with a song from the
brilliant Baterz,
our current “Artiste
of the Month”..... and don’t forget, it’s not
too late to subscribe
to 3D Radio(and go into the prize
draw!) – just go tohttp://threedradio.comfor details!

Radio announcer Phil J.
for so ably covering our absence last week while we were in Melbourne... we will get his playlist posted soon... but the break
refreshed our enthusiasm for the music we play! The ‘Dig It Up!’ show was
fabulous and inspired our choice for our new “Band
of theMonth” – Australian psych
purveyors the Lovetones, who played an intimate, mesmerising set upstairs at the
PalaceTheatre. We began this week’s show with a long track from Wolfy & the Bat Cubs
before later moving on to the latest
album by the
Higher State, an orange vinyl single from the Black Angels, a Garden Path cover from the new album by
the Molting Vultures and the debut EP from
young Geelong outfit, the Murlocs, who
feature Australian legendBroderickSmith’s son Ambrose on vocals and
harmonica. From France, we heard Sheetah et les Weismullers,
from Italy, Jennifer
Gentle and from the UK there were the
Horrors... throw in a psych-flavoured
Bee Gees song, the
sole single by Lotus from 1971, a classic from the Spikes plus many
more and there you have it! The latest edition
