Three D Radio announcer, Megan Cat (up until recently with her husband, the late Peter Brat) lives in "The BratHaus" a rural seaside home about 100km from Adelaide on South Australia's scenic Fleurieu Peninsula.
Veteran musician Peter, and artist/musician Megan, were long-time DJs on Three D Radio 93.7fm
, Adelaide's eclectic independent music station.
Together Peter & Megan, known as "The Cat and The Brat" created this blog to allow listeners to review the playlists of their radio show, "Technicolour Dreaming" , watch clips of selected songs and simply join them in the enjoyment of their favourite music... psychedelia, 60's garage,
surf, punk/post-punk, pop, folk-rock, glam, 'Krautrock', goth, 80's electro... and much more!
But The Cat is carrying on the tradition, with guest co-presenters, and "Technicolour Dreaming" will continue in the same format, drawing from the huge "Cat & Brat" music collection, with the addition of new releases and reissues to keep things current. The Brat is hugely missed, but the show must go on, as he wanted...

Obscured by...

Beginning our regular opening set of Australian recordings from the 60’s/70’s with an obscure 7” single by the Limit, which seems to have been released twice by the Australasian arm of RCA Records, firstly in 1968 and then again in 1969, yet sadly failing to bother the ‘hit parade’ on either occasion despite its quality, we moved through some equally fine songs by bands such as the Throb, MPD Ltd and Adelaide’s the Hergs plus a single by the short-lived ‘power trioBulldog, which featured members of Procession, the Purple Hearts and the Bay City Union. While keeping a general psych/garage focus, we then ventured further out in time and place to the 80’s and beyond, with the likes of the Wylde Mammoths from Sweden, Magic Lantern [ a Sun Araw-related project] from the USA, Italy’s Head & the Hares, the Pandoras from California and Something Really Beautiful, whose fine song we discovered on a sampler LP from UK label Creation Records and who apparently released only one single before disappearing ... but at least they left us this great slice of neo-psychedelia. Also featured were tracks from recent reissues of albums by Comus, the Druids of Stonehenge and Paul Revere & the Raiders as well as a track from Hapshash & the Coloured Coat’s sole album, produced by member Guy Stevens, plus another spin of the sitar headswirler by Kali Bahlu by [rare] request. All pretty rare, semi-forgotten yet worthy stuff...just your usual “obscured by...”, presented for your listening pleasure this week by the Cat and the Brat!

Obscured By...

It was a largely Australian show today, beginning with our regular selection of 60’s and early 70’s sounds by artists as diverse as Barrington Davis, Love Machine and Adelaide’s the Hergs, and including the weird single from an equally weird yet iconic Aussie movie, Stork. Then it was time for some examples of the particularly Antipodean take on post-punk which flourished here after 1977, featuring, amongst others, the Fabulous Marquises, Tactics, the Moodists and Ugly, Ugly, Ugly. Then it was overseas to Germany, the USA and even Japan, where we heard a long piece from Terahara Taka’aki, better known as J.A.Caesar, taken from the wonderful ‘Electric Psychedelic Sitar Headswirlers’ series... and not forgetting the UK, which provided a couple of songs from the very cool reissue of the first 3 albums by the Bee Gees, which was our featured boxset. We finished with our “Letter of the Week” segment, diving blindly into the C sections of the 3D library and finding... Colostomy Bag Lady, for instance! Great stuff! All these rarities and forgotten gems presented for you this week by the Cat and the Brat.....

Technicolour Dreaming

A solo Peter Brat began this first edition of Technicolour Dreaming for 2012 with a rousing rama-lama from the MC5 to set the tone for the rest of the show, and indeed the year! There were tracks from current Australian bands such as the Frowning Clouds, Belles Will Ring and Midnight Woolf, plus locals, the Asteroid Belt, as well as sides by their 60’s predecessors such as Oak Apple Day and Normie Rowe, plus Adelaide groovers, the Masters Apprentices, the Hergs and Glass Web [a member of whom turned up almost a decade later as bassist in the Brats!] From the 60’s we also heard the Dave Clark 5, the Perpetuated Spirits of Turpentine and Love, as well as one of my fave singles from the Seeds, plus a bunch of new bands like the Hoa Hoas, Moon Duo and the sublime Espers, before finishing with our latest ‘Band of the Month’, San Francisco’s Thee Oh Sees, who will be returning to play here in Adelaide at ‘Jive’ on the 21st of January as part of their Australian tour... go check ‘em out, ‘cos they are a blindingly good live act! Technicolour Dreaming

It was RADIOTHON time here on Adelaide’s 3D Radio this week, so the Cat and the Brat played lots of our (and we hope, your) favourite tracks while dealing with the phonecalls from subscribers-to-be and doing special ‘giveaways’... yes, it was chaotic, but also FUN! And we thank all of you who have subscribed (or intend to subscribe) to this wonderful all-volunteer community radio station to help keep us going to air (and streaming on the ‘net!) for the coming year... our licence is for promoting independent and progressive music from all genres and eras, particularly local and Australian. That’s why you can hear the music we play on our shows... music that is largely ignored by other stations. So whether you live in Adelaide or Albuquerque, Berlin, Athens, Zagreb or wherever... check out our website at www.threedradio.com and subscribe to this great station!
