Obscured By...

Two ‘DOTS’, Michael Hunter & Peter Brat, were your guides this week into the murky world of forgotten, rarely heard and simply strange music that we like to play here on 3D Radio in Adelaide, Australia. As always, we began with a set of Australian rarities, this time from the 70’s, including comedian Norman Gunston’s take on punk-rock and the final single from Adelaide’s Vibrants, before throwing in a song which fitted our criteria because it has only just been released and this was possibly the first time it had received airplay – we refer, of course, to the Glenn Cardier track. Some listeners may question how a Beatles b-side could be ‘obscure’, but we played it for the bassline, which we, and an observant listener [Douglas P of Death in June fame], noticed was the same as the Wondermints used in their Abba cover... and it was a b-side! Other rare cover versions were also featured, including one by the accurately named Balsara & His Singing Sitars as well as the recent Scott Walker cover by 3D favourites, Trembling Bells and Bonnie Prince Billy, plus an adaption of a Dylan Thomas poem by Doug Parkinson. Mix in some French language singles, two bands called the Pussycats, one from Norway, the other from Chile, a song by Dengue Fever which was originally a hit in pre-Pol Pot Cambodia, some New Zealand 60’s psychedelia from the likes of the Gremlins and there you have it – another edition of “Obscured by...”!

Obscured By...

We had the first three tracks by the same band under different names.  We had another sad goodbye, this time to Adam Yauch/MCA of the Beastie Boys.  There were rarities that perhaps deserved to be so but we played them anyway (Bucks Fizz, Norwood Boys etc.)  We had Buddy Holly with The Hollies recorded several decades apart, along with very rare psychedelia / pop from all over the place.  Along the way were The Damned covering Jefferson Airplane, and early 70s Japanese girl group Golden Half covering The Partridge Family.  We also had all three "dots": Cat, Brat, Michael Hunter.  The whole playlist is as follows, so you can marvel at its eccentricity!

Technicolour Dreaming

 Thanks go out to fellow 3D Radio announcer Phil J. for so ably covering our absence last week while we were in Melbourne... we will get his playlist posted soon... but the break refreshed our enthusiasm for the music we play! The ‘Dig It Up!’ show was fabulous and inspired our choice for our new “Band of the Month” – Australian psych purveyors the Lovetones, who played an intimate, mesmerising set upstairs at the Palace Theatre. We began this week’s show with a long track from Wolfy & the Bat Cubs before later  moving on to the latest album by the Higher State, an orange vinyl single from the Black Angels, a Garden Path cover from the new album by the Molting Vultures and the debut EP from young Geelong outfit, the Murlocs, who feature Australian legend Broderick Smith’s son Ambrose on vocals and harmonica. From France, we heard Sheetah et les Weismullers, from Italy, Jennifer Gentle and from the UK there were the Horrors... throw in a psych-flavoured Bee Gees song, the sole single by Lotus from 1971, a classic from the Spikes plus many more and there you have it! Obscured By...

 After the regular opening set of 60’s Australian rarities, we ventured off into space with Jim Keays and eventually ended with ‘Moondawn’, a slice of 70’s deutsche drone from Klaus Schultze... all very ethereal! Stuffed within these bookends however, we ventured, as usual, all over the place! Included was a track from Harvey Matusow, once named “America’s Most Hated Man” for his role in the McCarthy anti-communist witch-hunt of the ‘50s before reinventing himself as an avant-garde artiste and moving to the UK, hanging out with Yoko Ono, Warhol and Mailer etc (check out his story on wiki) and recording an LP. We also indulged our fondness for obscure compilations such as the ‘Sounds from Psychedelphia’ put out in the ‘90s by US label, Lounge Records, as well as some rarities made so by being ‘limited editions’, for example, the 7" orange vinyl single by the Black Angels and the 1979 Brian Sands EP featuring the Monkees cover...
