Three D Radio announcer, Megan Cat (up until recently with her husband, the late Peter Brat) lives in "The BratHaus" a rural seaside home about 100km from Adelaide on South Australia's scenic Fleurieu Peninsula.
Veteran musician Peter, and artist/musician Megan, were long-time DJs on Three D Radio 93.7fm
, Adelaide's eclectic independent music station.
Together Peter & Megan, known as "The Cat and The Brat" created this blog to allow listeners to review the playlists of their radio show, "Technicolour Dreaming" , watch clips of selected songs and simply join them in the enjoyment of their favourite music... psychedelia, 60's garage,
surf, punk/post-punk, pop, folk-rock, glam, 'Krautrock', goth, 80's electro... and much more!
But The Cat is carrying on the tradition, with guest co-presenters, and "Technicolour Dreaming" will continue in the same format, drawing from the huge "Cat & Brat" music collection, with the addition of new releases and reissues to keep things current. The Brat is hugely missed, but the show must go on, as he wanted...

Technicolour Dreaming

We played tracks from several new albums that have rapidly wormed their way into our ‘faves of 2013’ this week, beginning with the excellent newie from King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard. I know we’ve said it before, but they are fast becoming one of our all-time favourite bands – they keep producing diverse and intriguing new sounds with each release... in a just world they’d be famous! Another stunner is the latest album by California’s Lumerians – how can we not love a band who, having taken their name from Star Trek aliens, are making some of the most interesting psychedelic music on this planet! And then there are the young Irish teenagers, the Strypes, who, while in thrall to 60’s R&B, have managed to make it their own ‘now-sounds’ as their debut LP amply demonstrates. Then there are the Walking Who from Wollongong whose new EP ‘Mansions’ adds to their growing list of fine releases – you may remember their cool version of Jacques Dutronc’s ‘Et Moi Et Moi Et Moi’ from the recent ‘Mélodie Française’ compilation on Australia’s Original Matters label – as well as Ben Mason’s faithful but solo reproduction of the Zombies’ ‘Odessey & Oracle’ on an extremely limited vinyl LP release. Of course, older music was not neglected on the show, with tracks by Neo-Maya and the Byrds through to T.Rex, the Stranglers and Siouxsie & the Banshees, right up to more recent songs by faves such as Pugwash and Sula Bassana. So much music, so little time... so until next week.....

Technicolour Dreaming

Having just rediscovered a favourite TV cartoon, the Brat just had to start with the New York Dolls version of its theme song and dedicate it to his Cat! But it was not all frivolity this week – we had some seriously fine music to share, including a track from Ben Mason’s lovingly crafted re-creation of the Zombies’ classic ‘Odessey & Oracle’ LP which he has released as a very limited vinyl edition – we’ve included his Youtube “Making Of...” mini-movie to give you more details. We also played the long opening song from the excellent new King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard release, further tracks from the brilliant new Lumerians album and the White Fence and Permanent Clear Light vinyl singles, plus another from the second instalment of groovy Geelong label Anti-Fade’s “New Centre of the Universe” compilation series, as well as a Spizzenergi cover from the latest EP by Canberra surf punks, Space Party. There was some 60’s psychedelic excellence in the form of songs by H.P.Lovecraft, the End and Keith, a track from the Teardrop Explodes’ second album, Bow Wow Wow’s ode to cassette recording .... and lots more before we ended with yet another in our ongoing quest for ‘alternative versions’, this one of a Byrds’ standard. And there it was – the sound of Technicolour Dreaming on 3D Radio, Adelaide, Australia.....

Technicolour Dreaming

After last week’s ‘technical difficulties’, it was a pleasure to have a veteran of the Adelaide music scene, Vic Conrad [aka Mr V] join us in the studio for a chat about Gray Packham’s new album ‘La La Land’, the latest release from one of his ventures, Walking Bird Records. The album will be launched at the Grace Emily Hotel on Sunday afternoon with performances by most of the musicians involved, both individually and playing Gray’s songs, and should prove to be one of this year’s live musical highlights, so get along if you can. We also featured a number of other Australian releases including those of Melbourne psychedelicists the Grand Rapids, Davey Lane’s new E.P. and the latest compilation from Geelong’s prolific Anti-Fade Records. We also played the A-side of the debut single by our Finnish faves Permanent Clear Light on the wonderful vinyl-only Fruits De Mer label, presented in a 3D pic-sleeve [glasses included!] as well as a slice of dreamy pop from the UK’s Amor De Dias plus, as always, a bunch of 60’s psychedelic rarities from bands such as Pisces, the Golden Dawn and Austria’s Hide & Seek.
