Sitars, theremin and mellotron, backwards guitar, phasing and fuzz, fringes and mohawks, paisley, black, velvet and leather, feedback, bass and drone, beads, berets and safety-pins, Shindig! and Creem, 3 chord wonders, teenage symphonies and snarl, Rickenbacker, Farfisa and 4-track recorders... onstage at CBGB's, Max's Kansas City or the Trip, the Roundhouse, the 100 Club or the Crystal Ballroom, Catcher's, Big Daddy's or the Squatters Arms.... and the Cat and the Brat on 3D Radio!
Three D Radio announcer, MeganCat (up until recently with her husband, the late Peter Brat)lives in "The BratHaus" a rural seaside home about 100km from Adelaide on South Australia's scenic Fleurieu Peninsula. Veteran musician Peter, and artist/musician Megan, were long-time DJs onThree D Radio 93.7fm, Adelaide's eclectic independent music station. Together Peter & Megan, known as "The Cat and The Brat" created this blog to allow listeners to review the playlists of their radio show, "Technicolour Dreaming", watch clips of selected songs and simply join them in the enjoyment of their favourite music... psychedelia, 60's garage, surf, punk/post-punk, pop, folk-rock, glam, 'Krautrock', goth, 80's electro... and much more!
But The Cat is carrying on the tradition, with guest co-presenters, and "Technicolour Dreaming" will continue in the same format, drawing from the huge "Cat & Brat" music collection, with the addition of new releases and reissues to keep things current. The Brat is hugely missed, but the show must go on, as he wanted...
The first show of winter, and it seems that I was a bit fixated on all things spacey, with bands "Death By Raygun", "Spaceman", "Spacegazer" and "Basement Spaceman" all featuring this week. And I just hadto start the show with a track off Eno's classic"Here Come the Warm Jets" LP, as I've had it on high rotation at home for days, and when a song gets stuck in your head, sometimes the best way to exorcise it from your mind is to play it for the masses - works for me! And here are some other songs that caught my ear or took my fancy this week..check out the playlist below -

A few notable new releases played on Technicolour Dreaming this week included The Honey Pot's latest,"Inside The Whale", which has a real West-Coast 60's psych feel to it, out now on MegaDodo Records; and The Murlocs new one "Young Blindness" - and if you were planning to buy the coloured vinyl, it's too late!! Melbourne bands were well represented on the show, making up 6 of the selections, plus the usual French oddities, some Canadian coolness, as well as tracks from Germany, Norway, Russia and The Ukraine - there's so much fantastic music out there, both old and new, the world over. Just 2 hours a week is never enough! Here's the playlist, plus visuals.....

We had some new compilations to
share with you this week, dear 3D Radio
listeners, including a double-CD of Syd Barrett/Pink Floyd covers, which was an end-of-the-year
bonus from the lovely people at Fruits de Mer
Records in the UK, as well as another fine Active
Listener compilation, “Forever Changing –
A Tribute to Love’s Forever Changes LP”, both of which we shall
certainly be plundering over the months ahead. There were new tracks by artists
from various parts of the globe including Tasmania’s Violet
Swells, Spain’s My Expansive Awareness
and Canada’s Elephant Stone plus some older
ones from the likes of Cheval Sombre, Wire, Sons of Adam
and Russia’s excellent Polska Radio One.
Then there was our “Artiste of the Week”....
Scotland’s own Jim Noir, whose four albums
and plethora of singles and EPs gave us lots to choose from, starting with a
track from his brilliant new album “Finnish Line”.
We realise we say this about our feature artists each week but that doesn’t
make it less true.... you should investigate the Jim
Noir back-catalogue – you won’t be sorry!! To finish the show, we dug
out one of our all-time faves, the 2011 album by Dark
Ocean Colors and with that, we’ll leave you until next week.....
..... so here is the playlist,
with visual additives.....
