Three D Radio announcer, Megan Cat (up until recently with her husband, the late Peter Brat) lives in "The BratHaus" a rural seaside home about 100km from Adelaide on South Australia's scenic Fleurieu Peninsula.
Veteran musician Peter, and artist/musician Megan, were long-time DJs on Three D Radio 93.7fm
, Adelaide's eclectic independent music station.
Together Peter & Megan, known as "The Cat and The Brat" created this blog to allow listeners to review the playlists of their radio show, "Technicolour Dreaming" , watch clips of selected songs and simply join them in the enjoyment of their favourite music... psychedelia, 60's garage,
surf, punk/post-punk, pop, folk-rock, glam, 'Krautrock', goth, 80's electro... and much more!
But The Cat is carrying on the tradition, with guest co-presenters, and "Technicolour Dreaming" will continue in the same format, drawing from the huge "Cat & Brat" music collection, with the addition of new releases and reissues to keep things current. The Brat is hugely missed, but the show must go on, as he wanted...

Technicolour Dreaming

After last week’s ‘technical difficulties’, it was a pleasure to have a veteran of the Adelaide music scene, Vic Conrad [aka Mr V] join us in the studio for a chat about Gray Packham’s new album ‘La La Land’, the latest release from one of his ventures, Walking Bird Records. The album will be launched at the Grace Emily Hotel on Sunday afternoon with performances by most of the musicians involved, both individually and playing Gray’s songs, and should prove to be one of this year’s live musical highlights, so get along if you can. We also featured a number of other Australian releases including those of Melbourne psychedelicists the Grand Rapids, Davey Lane’s new E.P. and the latest compilation from Geelong’s prolific Anti-Fade Records. We also played the A-side of the debut single by our Finnish faves Permanent Clear Light on the wonderful vinyl-only Fruits De Mer label, presented in a 3D pic-sleeve [glasses included!] as well as a slice of dreamy pop from the UK’s Amor De Dias plus, as always, a bunch of 60’s psychedelic rarities from bands such as Pisces, the Golden Dawn and Austria’s Hide & Seek. Technicolour Dreaming

Ahh, technology... don’t you love it? For this week’s show we’d lined up a ‘live-to-air’ phone interview with Rick Brewer, drummer with Australian pop legends the Zoot, and were looking forward to discussing his experiences with that band, their new CD/DVD of their 2011 reunion tour, his perspective on Australian music in the 60’s and 70’s and other highlights of his long musical career – he was on the line chatting and we went to air and...... nothing! A “technical difficulty” had intervened so the interview didn’t happen – ahh, the wonders of the age! Grrr!! Fortunately, the ability to spin discs was unaffected so we were able to play a selection of the music he was involved with, including 1960’s Adelaide group the Third Party and of course the Zoot. The rest of the show went without a hitch however, and we featured the latest recordings by Technicolour Dreaming favourites such as the Barbarellatones, Lumerians and Permanent Clear Light as well as new tracks by Adelaide bands, Glass Skies and Last Days of Kali. We also couldn’t refrain from throwing in a musical commentary on the recent Australian elections with our first few songs – the X-Ray-Z song, in particular, still remains a relevant reflection on the Liberal Party’s election, both in 1978 and 2013! And with summer approaching we thought it appropriate to play some Surf School Dropouts and Sunnyboys, plus a forgotten Move b-side, a perennial Mike Furber fave and much more.....
...... so here is the playlist plus some visual treats.....
David Bowie – Big Brother / Chant of the Ever Circling Skeletal Family     (‘Diamond Dogs’ LP 1974 UK)
X-Ray-Z – Three Glorious Years      (‘Lethal Weapons’ compilation LP 1978 Australia)
the Bitter Lemons – Canberra Blues      (7”single 1965 Australia)
Glass Skies – To Be True      (CDsingle b-side [to Highway] 2013 Adelaide, Australia)
Peter Daltrey & the Asteroid No.4 – Holy      (‘The Journey’ 2013 UK/USA)
Cheval Sombre – Hyacinth House [Doors cover]      (‘Cheval Sombre’ 2008 USA)
Permanent Clear Light – Constant Gardener      (‘Beyond These Things’ 2013 Finland)
Giles, Giles & Fripp – Call Tomorrow      (‘The Cheerful Insanity of Giles, Giles & Fripp’ LP 1968 UK)
the Monkees – Daily Nightly      (‘Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd.’ LP 1967 USA)
the Move – Omnibus      (7”single b-side [to Wild Tiger Woman] 1968 UK)

Technicolour Dreaming

We got a nice surprise in the mail today in the form of the new Permanent Clear Light CD all the way from Helsinki, Finland. We were most impressed by a track we played earlier this year so we had high hopes for the album... and were not disappointed – it’s brilliant! Don’t know what it is about those northern climes, but many of our recent faves such as the Apricot, Vibravoid, Life On Earth, the Amazing and many others have come from northern Europe and now PCL joins that list, so “do yourself a favour” and check them out – we’ll certainly be playing more songs from the album in the weeks to come for you to hear. Also featured this week was the latest release by the ever-prolific Ty Segall plus a bunch of cool 60’s tracks from around the world by the likes Rainbow Ffolly, We All Together, the Churchills, Ultimate Spinach and Adelaide’s own Masters Apprentices – in other words, back to business as usual for the Cat & the Brat on Technicolour Dreaming after last week’s hectic 3D Radio-thon edition.....
