Obscured By...

Normally we wouldn’t play quite so many songs from a pair of albums, but the 40^th anniversary re-issue of the original 1972 Nuggets compilation has prompted a couple of Australian releases to join the on-going series and thankfully didn’t just contain ‘the hits’ or ‘oft-comped’... so we felt free to plunder! Of particular interest were the ‘versions’ by current bands... some interesting interpretations indeed [though why so very few bands from outside the Sydney/Melbourne axis, hmmm?] To balance this outpouring of Australiana, we threw in a bunch of Swedish psych/freakbeat singles from the 60’s, an obscure Luke Haines recording, a 17 minute Neil Young track from his new album [yes, he’s hardly ‘obscure’, but well, who else but we three DOTS would play such long songs on radio?], plus a brand-new demo from garage/surf kings Dieselwitch...

Technicolour Dreaming

This week we had another of those ‘surprise guests’ that join us occasionally... Sam from Subtract-S dropped their hot-off-the-presses EP into the 3D Radio studios during the show, so we naturally asked him to stay for a short chat... Subtract-S comprises ¾ of the now-defunct Almost Numan, whose sole album is a Cat & Brat fave, so we were keen to learn about the new band, inform our listeners about upcoming live shows and hear their debut CD, all of which Sam was happy to do... and much jollity ensued! Of course we also played a myriad of diverse tunes, ranging from the Sand Pebbles through to Earthless [who are coming to town on December 9^th], a rare Luke Haines track and a song from Lothar & the Hand People’s 1968 debut LP. We featured a Bowie cover from both Brillig, our current ‘Band of the Month’ [joined on this occasion by the lovely LeighStarDust], and another from the Barbarellatones before finishing with the Triffids from their 1984 EP...

Obscured By...

 Perhaps it was the weather, but the majority of today’s show came from the currently cooler climes of the northern part of the planet where it is approaching winter, whilst here in Adelaide it was a very warm 37 degrees C - yet still the music brought to you by the Cat & the Brat was hot regardless of locale! We went from New Zealand via Australia with the Cleves and heard Steve Kipner’s Tin Tin before heading over to Europe with Deuter and venturing into the Swedish psychedelic underground of the late 80’s with S.T.Mikael before returning to the UK and the Human League. It would not of course be Obscured by...  without a few ‘odd’ tracks which this week included songs about puppies, both dead and alive, plus Nico’s take on all things Germanic. We also investigated US punk/new wave from, primarily, Boston and Cleveland and then, dropping back a decade, looked mainly at the Californian hotspot which gave us so many great bands like the Electric Prunes and the Turtles, before finishing with a Davy Jones from the UK who was not a Monkee, but instead a certain Mr David Jones who later traded under the surname of ‘Bowie’...

Technicolour Dreaming

The Brat was ‘flying solo’ for this edition of Technicolour Dreaming, but was not alone in the 3D studio... Seth Sutton from the USA, who records under the banner of Useless Eaters, plus Jack Petty, a member of his touring band, were guest DJs on this week’s show, prior to their gig later that night at the Metro. They came armed with a large box of vinyl to plunder, including  Useless Eaters latest 7”, a Viva la American Death Ray song, a reissue of Figure of Light’s 1972 single, classics from God and the Pretty Things and lots more... plus we spun Adelaide bands Rule of Thirds and Big Richard Insect, who were playing the Metro show as well... Also featured this week were a few of the current wave of American garage/psych purveyors such as Moon Duo, Lumerians and Ty Segall, before we ended with local outfit Brillig, our current “Band of the Month”. So a good time was had by all... but I do hope the Cat returns to the airwaves next week!
