Technicolour Dreaming

The Brat was ‘flying solo’ for this edition of Technicolour Dreaming, but was not alone in the 3D studio... Seth Sutton from the USA, who records under the banner of Useless Eaters, plus Jack Petty, a member of his touring band, were guest DJs on this week’s show, prior to their gig later that night at the Metro. They came armed with a large box of vinyl to plunder, including  Useless Eaters latest 7”, a Viva la American Death Ray song, a reissue of Figure of Light’s 1972 single, classics from God and the Pretty Things and lots more... plus we spun Adelaide bands Rule of Thirds and Big Richard Insect, who were playing the Metro show as well... Also featured this week were a few of the current wave of American garage/psych purveyors such as Moon Duo, Lumerians and Ty Segall, before we ended with local outfit Brillig, our current “Band of the Month”. So a good time was had by all... but I do hope the Cat returns to the airwaves next week!

Technicolour Dreaming

Trawling through the 3D Radio library’s “new releases” section provided us with a huge pile of music to add to the already large stack we’d chosen to bring in, way too much for just one show, so we cherry-picked, but just had to start with the insidiously catchy pre-release single from the upcoming new Jim Jones Revue album. From there, it went all over the place... from Geelong we played a track by the Citradels, from the Central Coast of NSW we heard the Mandelas, all the way from San Diego some psychedelic grooviness courtesy of the Koolaid Electric Company, from England came the title track from the debut LP by the Galileo 7 and from here in Adelaide, the True Detective and a demo from Rocket Frog. Throw in a variety of styles and sounds, including the psych drone of Lumerians and Crystal Stilts, both from the USA circa 2011, plus our current Band of the Month, Adelaide’s own Ride Into The Sun, and it was another edition of Technicolour Dreaming, done and dusted.....

Obscured By...

Now and then were both well-represented this week, as were tracks from Bulgaria and New Zealand and other locales worldwide. There were classical versions of rock songs, rock versions of show tunes, songs from the extensive Tommy Boyce & Bobby Hart songbook, cuts from the soundtracks of 60’s Hollywood ‘teen-exploitation’ movies [which weren’t necessarily in the actual film... or even by a ‘real’ band] and a group exploiting the name of a TV show [without actually having anything to do with said show!]... what more could you ask for? A Danish ‘sunshine pop’/surf band or an Adelaide artist covering other Adelaide performers or some psychedelic drone from Iceland or a Californian band revering a 50’s ‘outsider’ artist/philosopher whilst taking their name from a mythical ancient continent perhaps? Rarities abounded, with the three DOTS [Michael, Megan & Peter] all present and accounted for.....
