Technicolour Dreaming

Once again this week the Cat and the Brat played a diverse set, ranging from the modern psych of America’s Andrew Douglas Rothbard, Sweden’s Dungen and Italy’s the Selfish Cales, to the 6o’s UK freakbeat of the Eyes and an early Frank Zappa cover by the West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band..... from some iconic Roxy Music to a Mexican revolutionary anthem by Adelaide’s Van Cleef, from an ode to the discotheque by Adelaide’s Mynd Gardeners to Mick Ronson’s brilliant ‘Only After Dark’, and from the Demon Parade to the Church to Ride Into The Sun to God! Ain’t that rock’n’roll religion?! And we ended the show with the surf’n’sleaze of the Barbarellatones, our current “Band Of The Month”, giving their unique spin to a Jan & Dean classic.....

Technicolour Dreaming

This week the Cat and the Brat featured old songs and new, favourites and obscurities, with different sounds from both here in Australia and from the rest of the world... definitely Technicolour Dreaming! Beginning with a woozy track from the 2001 album by Texan trio, Lift To Experience, we ventured through some disparate psychedelic music from the likes of Suns of Arqa, Mother Tucker’s Yellow Duck, Scorpio Tube and Espers, to the garage beat of Melbourne’s Los Hories, UK band Thee Attacks, and Adelaide’s the Molting Vultures, local punk from Standard Union, Nederbeat from the Outsiders, dropping in some classic Easybeats and Death In June, with the Suburban Lawns “new-wave-novelty-hit” from 1979, ‘Gidget Goes To Hell’, thrown in as.... well, as a ‘novelty’! New to the station library were some fairly recent albums by UK band, the Psychotic Reaction, dropped in by a former member, Luke, who also brought in an advance copy of the debut album by Adelaide’s surf/garage kings, DieselWitch, his current band... so of course we played a track from both, ending the show with a ‘different’ take on Duran Duran’s “Planet Earth” by veteran Adelaide punks, Fear and Loathing!

Obscured By... March 29, 2011

Peter Brat was the sole ‘dot’ presenting “Obscured by...” this week. As usual, there was a fair smattering of Adelaide and Australian 60’s and 70’s recordings, as well as psych, pop, surf and garage et al. from Indonesia, Japan, Europe, the UK and USA, including a 1971 prog track from Demis Roussos’ band ‘Aphrodite’s Children’, one from Scott Walker’s 2006 album, “the Drift”, on 4AD Records, and Sleater-Kinney (with the B52’s Fred Schneider) doing a cover of the title track from the movie “Hedwig and the Angry Inch”.

In this week’s TECHNICOLOUR DREAMING, we played our usual eclectic mix of genre, old and new, home and away, and introduced a new feature... our pick for “album of the month”! And the first in the series is... the BLACK ANGELS “Phosphene Dreams”. This is the 3^rd album from this Austin, Texas band and it’s fast becoming our favourite!
