Three D Radio announcer, Megan Cat (up until recently with her husband, the late Peter Brat) lives in "The BratHaus" a rural seaside home about 100km from Adelaide on South Australia's scenic Fleurieu Peninsula.
Veteran musician Peter, and artist/musician Megan, were long-time DJs on Three D Radio 93.7fm
, Adelaide's eclectic independent music station.
Together Peter & Megan, known as "The Cat and The Brat" created this blog to allow listeners to review the playlists of their radio show, "Technicolour Dreaming" , watch clips of selected songs and simply join them in the enjoyment of their favourite music... psychedelia, 60's garage,
surf, punk/post-punk, pop, folk-rock, glam, 'Krautrock', goth, 80's electro... and much more!
But The Cat is carrying on the tradition, with guest co-presenters, and "Technicolour Dreaming" will continue in the same format, drawing from the huge "Cat & Brat" music collection, with the addition of new releases and reissues to keep things current. The Brat is hugely missed, but the show must go on, as he wanted...

Technicolour Dreaming

We devoted a chunk of this week’s show to a phone interview with one of our favourite bands... Melbourne’s dulcimer-driven Dandelion Wine, who are in town on June 16 as part of their ‘Light Streaming Down 10th Anniversary Tour’ commemorating the release of their first EP back in 2002. Amongst other things, we spoke to Nicholas about their German record label, Black Rain, the upcoming European tour (their 7th), favourite toy lobsters and, of course, dulcimers and other exotic string instruments. They are a great live act, so try and catch them next time they are in your locale. Speaking of great live performances, we also played a track from the lovely LeighStarDust who is making her first live appearance in over a year, supporting Dandelion Wine. During the rest of the show there were tracks from new releases by the likes of Gravenhurst and Suzi Chunk from the UK  and Aussie outfits, the Fabergettes and King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, as well as 60’s gems by Kaleidoscope and Chris Farlowe, 80’s Australian singles by Salamander Jim (Tex Perkins et al) and the Sacred Cowboys, plus local surf tunes from Dieselwitch and GT Stringer, before we finished with our current “Band of the Month”, the Sunnyboys... all this, and more, brought to you by the Cat and the Brat on 3D Radio 93.7fm, Adelaide’s foremost eclectic music station.....

Obscured By...

Sadly, there were two more RIPs to announce and commemorate - Bob Welch, ex-Fleetwood Mac guitarist and Eduard Khil, the Russian artist behind probably the most successful meme of recent times - quite different musically but both making their own mark on the world.    Elsewhere in the show, we continued with some favourite themes such as bizarre covers, rare singles from any place and any time, Australian obscurities, even some current Welsh music from Houdini Dax and Colorama.  Indeed, we - that is, all three "dots" - even saw fit to include a Wa Wa Nee single.  Have we no shame?  That's a rhetorical question, btw.

Annette Steele - Lazy River     (7” single 1967 Australia)
Yvonne Barrett – You’re the One [Petula Clark cover]     (7” single b-side of ‘Little People’ 1965 Aust.)
Noleen Batley – Running Round In Circles     (7” single b-side of ‘Heartaches and Kisses’ 1966 Aust.)

Technicolour Dreaming

After coincidentally beginning this week’s edition of  Technicolour Dreaming with Norway’s the Apricot and WalesApple, the Cat & the Brat just couldn’t resist a ‘fruit-salad’ set – the Electric Prunes even had a fruit-referencing song -  from around the world, but once we got to Quincy Conserve, it had to stop, because there are so many and we could have done a whole show of them... so we moved into more psychedelic sounds starting with perennial favourites, Wooden Shjips. Later, there were a bunch of local bands from different eras, such as Systems Go from the early 80’s through to debut releases by Jim Jennings [of God God Dammit Dammit fame] and the title track from the cassette-only EP by Major Crimes, plus the debut  Zoot single in support of singer Darryl Cotton’s battle with cancer, before we ended the show with the Sunnyboys in their first appearance as our new ‘Band of the Month’.....

Obscured By...

After hearing, shortly before going to air, the news about Adelaide singer Darryl Cotton‘s cancer diagnosis, we just had to play a favourite song from his old band, the Zoot, at the conclusion of our selection of Australian music which regularly opens our show.
