Sitars, theremin and mellotron, backwards guitar, phasing and fuzz, fringes and mohawks, paisley, black, velvet and leather, feedback, bass and drone, beads, berets and safety-pins, Shindig! and Creem, 3 chord wonders, teenage symphonies and snarl, Rickenbacker, Farfisa and 4-track recorders... onstage at CBGB's, Max's Kansas City or the Trip, the Roundhouse, the 100 Club or the Crystal Ballroom, Catcher's, Big Daddy's or the Squatters Arms.... and the Cat and the Brat on 3D Radio!
Three D Radio announcer, MeganCat (up until recently with her husband, the late Peter Brat)lives in "The BratHaus" a rural seaside home about 100km from Adelaide on South Australia's scenic Fleurieu Peninsula. Veteran musician Peter, and artist/musician Megan, were long-time DJs onThree D Radio 93.7fm, Adelaide's eclectic independent music station. Together Peter & Megan, known as "The Cat and The Brat" created this blog to allow listeners to review the playlists of their radio show, "Technicolour Dreaming", watch clips of selected songs and simply join them in the enjoyment of their favourite music... psychedelia, 60's garage, surf, punk/post-punk, pop, folk-rock, glam, 'Krautrock', goth, 80's electro... and much more!
But The Cat is carrying on the tradition, with guest co-presenters, and "Technicolour Dreaming" will continue in the same format, drawing from the huge "Cat & Brat" music collection, with the addition of new releases and reissues to keep things current. The Brat is hugely missed, but the show must go on, as he wanted...
Little ol' Adelaide has quite a musical heritage, which is probably why it was formally recognised by UNESCOin 2015 as a designated "City of Music", and one of only 116 cities around the globe recognised for their musical culture (OK, 116 is actually quite a few...!) So ahead of next week's Radiothon, I played a broad selection of Adelaide bands ranging from the 1960's to 2003, with some more recent examples expected to surface on the show on the 23rd (ie tomorrow). The eagle-eyed amongst you will probably notice that some of the Adelaide video clips don't match the actual song played (as the clips don't exist - yet), but I've included them as an example of the type of music (for strictly historical reasons - of course). And stop the presses, next week will be an extra special, one-off,"Obscured by ... Technicolour" with the inimitable Mr Michael Hunter returning as co-host - expect some, shall we say, unusual music on the Radiothon show. Playlist and video clips? See below...

It was a Cat alone this week, playing an 80’s-skewed selection of her favourites ranging from Adelaide’s Nuvo Bloc to the U.K.’s Japan, Gary Numan and the wonderful voice of Billy McKenzie in the Associates, with sidetrips to Shower Scene From Psycho and the Spikes. She did venture era-wise both back and forward from there though, with the very phased sound of Caleb from 1967 through to a track from the new Wooden Shjips album. And, of course, she played another track from our ‘Album of the Month’ by Almost Numan, this time from the “ON” disc of originals...

On this last day of winter, the Cat & the Brat
played an all-Australian show, with the exception
of four of our favourite ‘overseas’ bands, which of course meant playing some Velvet Underground... how could we not! The bulk
of the show though, featured current bands such as Adelaide’s own Like Leaves and
brillig, Melbourne’s exciting Frowning Clouds and Sydney’s Black Cab, then travelled back to the 80’s, including 2 bands
with new ‘best of’/rarities albums, the Lighthouse
Keepers and the Ups and Downs, plus
a few singles from the likes of the Church
and Lizard Train. And we bade farewell to the Sand
Pebbles in their final spin as ‘Album of the Month’......
.....so without further
ado, here is the full playlist.....

It was a briefer version of “Obscured by...” this week, with guest ‘dots’ Rodney & Jude, followed by Talbot Duckmanton, filling in until the very late arrival of regular ‘dot’, Peter Brat. But nonetheless, obscurities were still shown the light of day as usual... from the 1979 Australian single by Johnny Topper & His Beatnik Buddies to late 60s French psych band Dickens through demos by Adelaide bands, the Bad Poets and the U-Bombs, from the punk era, as well as classics by Mike Furber, the Leaves, the Rising Sons and Tony Worsley from 1965/66, it was again an eclectic show!
