Three D Radio announcer, Megan Cat (up until recently with her husband, the late Peter Brat) lives in "The BratHaus" a rural seaside home about 100km from Adelaide on South Australia's scenic Fleurieu Peninsula.
Veteran musician Peter, and artist/musician Megan, were long-time DJs on Three D Radio 93.7fm
, Adelaide's eclectic independent music station.
Together Peter & Megan, known as "The Cat and The Brat" created this blog to allow listeners to review the playlists of their radio show, "Technicolour Dreaming" , watch clips of selected songs and simply join them in the enjoyment of their favourite music... psychedelia, 60's garage,
surf, punk/post-punk, pop, folk-rock, glam, 'Krautrock', goth, 80's electro... and much more!
But The Cat is carrying on the tradition, with guest co-presenters, and "Technicolour Dreaming" will continue in the same format, drawing from the huge "Cat & Brat" music collection, with the addition of new releases and reissues to keep things current. The Brat is hugely missed, but the show must go on, as he wanted...

Technicolour Dreaming

Alongside some new releases by local Adelaide favourites Slingshot Dragster and the Dunes we also played tracks from the brand new albums from Dodson & Fogg, Ty Segall and White Fence, plus single A-sides from House of Fire and the Brian Jonestown Massacre’s ‘tambourine guy’ Joel Gion, King Penguin’s brilliant Byrds cover from Fruits de Mer’s lavish “7 & 7 Is” singles boxset, which was released this week. We also featured songs by Les Big Byrd, the Chemistry Set, Swiss psychedelecist Balduin and 60’s classics by Gary Walker & the Rain and the Millennium, as well as a previously unreleased track by the Velvet Underground, recorded in 1969 but only released in 1984 on the “VU” album. Last, but certainly not least, we celebrated Beaulieu Porch as our “Band of the Week”. Consisting of the compositions and recordings of Englishman Simon Berry, Beaulieu Porch has released two albums, an anthology and several singles, both vinyl and digital, on his own Tillsammans Records label, all of which he recently made available as free downloads on his bandcamp page. His modern, idiosyncratic take on vintage psychedelia has been hailed in magazines such as “Shindig!” and “Mojo” plus blogs like “The Active Listener” and various “Top 10 Albums of the Year” lists – not bad for a bloke recording alone in his home studio, and we are eagerly awaiting the completion of his new album which he reports is “about halfway there”. In the meantime we strongly advise downloading the back-catalogue – you won’t regret it! – and also checking out his clips on youtube, also made by him at home, a few of which we’ve posted below. So, until next week, it’s “cheerio” from the Cat and the Brat.....

Technicolour Dreaming

After last week’s 60’s-fest we thought we’d better catch up with the plethora of new music springing up around the world, though we did slip in a few older songs by the likes of Jacques Dutronc and Donovan, but mostly it was new releases, including a track from the forth-coming new album by Australia’s own King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, new singles released by the UK’s prolific State Records folks by French garage-psychsters Les Grys-Grys and Denmark’s the Youth, a new single by Triptides plus further tracks from the latest Ty Segall, Lorelle Meets The Obsolete, Soft Walls and New Electric Ride offerings. Whew! So much fine new music to choose from... and then we received not one, but TWO new albums from Hawaii-via-Hollywood’s fabulous glam-psych-gothabilly outfit, the Barbarellatones, prompting us to make them the latest Technicolour DreamingBand of the Week”. Led by main songwriter, surfer Robbie Quine, and arising from 90’s outfit Sex With Lurch, the band first came to our attention in 2006 with their fantastic “Invasion of the Surf Zombies” album which blended sci-fi, glam, schlock-horror, surf, punk, psych, goth and more in a swirling mix of genres and clever, often amusing lyrics wedded to memorable hooks and lots of twang – all of our favourite things.... how could we not like it? Since then, the ever-prolific band has released a bunch of great albums, with the two we just received in the mail the most recent – if songs like “Poledancer”, “Gothabilly Gulch” and “Truckstop Angel” don’t raise a smile while you start uncontrollably dancing, well....

..... so here is the full playlist, with some moving pictures.....

Technicolour Dreaming

There is so much great new music at the moment for us to play on Technicolour Dreaming we are occasionally guilty of failing to feature the equally wonderful sounds of past decades from around the world as much as we perhaps should. Not this week however... almost half the songs are from both days past and diverse locales, including, amongst the 60’s contingent, the USA‘s Lyme & Cybelle [featuring a young Warren Zevon] and Hour Glass [from whence the Allman brothers appeared], Sweden’s Mecki Mark Men, an unjustly obscure, fantastic track from Frenchman Bernard Chabert and the Atlantics’ classic “Come On” featuring vocals by Australian legend, the late Johnny Rebb. Not that the aforementioned “great new music” was ignored though, with a spangly new EP from Adelaide veterans the Mynd Gardeners and a wonderful new single from Chicago’s the Luck of Eden Hall, both of which can be found on bandcamp and other digital outlets, which brings us to this show’s “Band of the Week” – the White Kites hail from Warsaw in Poland [though singer Sean Palmer is English, the rest of the band are Polish] and their debut full-length LP “Missing”, which was released in late 2013, is a brilliant modern take on late 60’s/early 70’s UK pop psych, with elements of folk, music-hall whimsy and space-rock woven into an album of clever, hook-laden pop songs which could easily have come from that era, but, produced with current production values, it makes them simultaneously modern, and that’s no mean feat, plus mention must be made of the fantastic cover art which presents an accurate guide to the splendours within! They certainly deserve their “band of the week” accolade, so check them out – you won’t be disappointed! So, until next week....

Technicolour Dreaming

We had a guest in the studio with us this week ... Vic from Walking Bird Records came in to give us a sneak preview of their latest release, the album “Look!” by Adelaide’s own Tom Redwood, recorded in Vic’s Walking Bird studio and featuring members of Vic’s own band, Vic Conrad & the First Third on some of the songs. Though basically ‘singer/song-writer’ in genre, there are more electric ‘acid-folk’ and ‘soft-psych’ elements in some of the songs, which we found appropriate for Technicolour Dreaming – definitely worth checking out! Our “Band of the Week” fetured UK band the Sunchymes, whom regular listeners will recognise as long-time favourites on this show. Aaron from the band has assured us that a new album is nearing completion and we’re hoping that this will be the one that finally gets them the recognition they richly deserve – a very talented band! There were also tracks from Ty Segall, Grand Rapids, Wellwater Conspiracy and Singapore Sling plus a single from the wonderfully-named Dr Cosmo’s Tape Lab and much more.....
