Three D Radio announcer, Megan Cat (up until recently with her husband, the late Peter Brat) lives in "The BratHaus" a rural seaside home about 100km from Adelaide on South Australia's scenic Fleurieu Peninsula.
Veteran musician Peter, and artist/musician Megan, were long-time DJs on Three D Radio 93.7fm
, Adelaide's eclectic independent music station.
Together Peter & Megan, known as "The Cat and The Brat" created this blog to allow listeners to review the playlists of their radio show, "Technicolour Dreaming" , watch clips of selected songs and simply join them in the enjoyment of their favourite music... psychedelia, 60's garage,
surf, punk/post-punk, pop, folk-rock, glam, 'Krautrock', goth, 80's electro... and much more!
But The Cat is carrying on the tradition, with guest co-presenters, and "Technicolour Dreaming" will continue in the same format, drawing from the huge "Cat & Brat" music collection, with the addition of new releases and reissues to keep things current. The Brat is hugely missed, but the show must go on, as he wanted...

Technicolour Dreaming

Trawling through the 3D Radio library’s “new releases” section provided us with a huge pile of music to add to the already large stack we’d chosen to bring in, way too much for just one show, so we cherry-picked, but just had to start with the insidiously catchy pre-release single from the upcoming new Jim Jones Revue album. From there, it went all over the place... from Geelong we played a track by the Citradels, from the Central Coast of NSW we heard the Mandelas, all the way from San Diego some psychedelic grooviness courtesy of the Koolaid Electric Company, from England came the title track from the debut LP by the Galileo 7 and from here in Adelaide, the True Detective and a demo from Rocket Frog. Throw in a variety of styles and sounds, including the psych drone of Lumerians and Crystal Stilts, both from the USA circa 2011, plus our current Band of the Month, Adelaide’s own Ride Into The Sun, and it was another edition of Technicolour Dreaming, done and dusted.....

Obscured By...

Now and then were both well-represented this week, as were tracks from Bulgaria and New Zealand and other locales worldwide. There were classical versions of rock songs, rock versions of show tunes, songs from the extensive Tommy Boyce & Bobby Hart songbook, cuts from the soundtracks of 60’s Hollywoodteen-exploitation’ movies [which weren’t necessarily in the actual film... or even by a ‘real’ band] and a group exploiting the name of a TV show [without actually having anything to do with said show!]... what more could you ask for? A Danish ‘sunshine pop’/surf band or an Adelaide artist covering other Adelaide performers or some psychedelic drone from Iceland or a Californian band revering a 50’s ‘outsider’ artist/philosopher whilst taking their name from a mythical ancient continent perhaps? Rarities abounded, with the three DOTS [Michael, Megan & Peter] all present and accounted for.....

Technicolour Dreaming

In a first for our regularBand of the Monthfeature, we had several members of this month’s selection, Adelaide’s premier psychedelic outfit, Ride Into The Sun, in the 3D studio with us for an interview and also as guest presenters. They had lots to talk about – a new drummer, the return of their keyboardist, recording plans for an EP to be produced by Christian Bland of the Black Angels, discussion of the Austin Psych Fest and much more – and a bunch of songs for us to play including tracks by the aforementioned Black Angels, ex-Sydney band the Black Ryder [featuring the Cult’s Ian Asbury’s new wife Aimee], Austin’s The UFO Club and Iceland’s Singapore Sling. Also on this week’s show were tracks from the new Pony Face album and the Murlocs latest EP plus a few classic singles from the likes of T.Rex, Wire and the Rationals. Some more music, lots of chatting and laughing, and that was it! Another episode of Technicolour Dreaming with the Cat & the Brat.....

Obscured By...

This week’s edition, hosted by the Cat & the Brat, seemed to come in batches.... beginning with a b-side from Bitch [the band were formerly known as the Cleves and it’s under that name that we have featured them before] we moved into our customary start-up of Australasian 60’s-70’s rarities, including a live TV version of Fraternity’s ‘Seasons of Change’ and the sole single from the Harts. Then we moved up a decade or so with a bunch of mostly unreleased Australian demos from the likes of Adelaide’s legendary Speedboat and Melbourne’s Tlot Tlot [taken from a ‘Fast Forwardcassette magazine], before going all over the world for some proggy psych goodness, ranging from Switzerland’s Krokodil to Seoul’s Jang Hyun. Then it was New Zealand’s turn – for such a small country they certainly turned out an impressively large quantity of excellent pop-psych in the late 60’s, even continuing into the early 70’s – so it was only fair that we featured some of the more prominent acts such as the Fourmyula, Quincy Conserve and House of Nimrod, before paying tribute to the late Neil Armstrong by playing Dizzy Limits’ “Mare Tranquility” and Oak Apple Day’s classicMoonshotsingles. A few other obscurities along the way, such as Deep Feeling’s version of “I Put a Spell on You” from 1966 and a psychobilly classic from Sunglasses After Dark, then it was all over – until next time.....
